Germany frustrated by Spain in 1st leg of Nations League final

Germany and Spain played out a goalless draw in the first leg of the UEFA Women's Nations League final at Fritz Walter Stadion on Friday.

Both sides hit the woodwork on a cold night in Kaiserslautern but it was Germany who created the better chances, forcing Spain goalkeeper Cata Coll into six saves.

However, the hosts could not break the holders down and they may be made to rue their prolificacy when the teams meet in the second leg at the Metropolitano Stadium in Madrid on Tuesday.

In what was a repeat of last summer's Euro 2025 semifinal, won 1-0 by Spain after extra time, Germany dominated the first half but could not reward a fervent home crowd with a goal.

Klara Bühl saw an early strike saved by Coll, who then made a fine stop with her feet to deny full-back Franziska Kett.

Spain captain Irene Paredes was then called into action, clearing off the line after Coll had finally been beaten by Jule Brand.

Germany continued to create and waste chances, with Coll again denying Bühl before the break to keep the game goalless at half-time.

Sonia Bermúdez's Spain side, the current world champions, did improve after the restart, with Alexia Putellas bending wide and Esther González hitting the post, but Germany were soon back on top.

The lively Bühl saw two shots blocked, Sjoeke Nüsken headed over when unmarked at a corner and Bühl then struck the woodwork as time ran out.

Christian Wück's side continued to seek a winner going into four minutes of stoppage time, with Shekiera Martinez sending a half-chance wide from 30 yards with Coll off her line.

Spain, meanwhile, appeared happy to take the draw, leaving everything to play for on home soil back in Madrid next week.

La Roja are aiming to win the trophy for the second successive time having won the inaugural Nations League in 2024, while Germany are looking to add to their 11 major titles, the last of which came in the 2016 Olympics.
