Wolfsburg hand Man United first Women's Champions League loss

Manchester United fell to a first Champions League defeat after losing 5-2 at VfL Wolfsburg.

Fridolina Rolfö struck against her former club, but two goals from Ella Peddemors put Wolfsburg ahead and a chaotic end to the first half saw Lineth Beerensteyn strike before Melvine Malard immediately responded.

Beerensteyn added her second after the break and Vivien Endemann struck at the death to end United's three-game winning run in the competition.

Svenja Huth rattled the underside of the crossbar in the early stages, but United took the lead after 14 minutes when Malard raced down the left and sent over a pinpoint cross for Rolfo, who powered a header past Stina Johannes.

A pulsating encounter saw Wolfsburg level three minutes later when a poor clearance from Safia Middleton-Patel reached Peddemors on the edge of the box and the midfielder curled the ball home.

Wolfsburg doubled their lead out of nothing in the 37th minute when Peddemors' cross flew through the penalty area and nestled in the bottom corner, before Beerensteyn added a third in the 45th minute with a stunning finish into the top corner from the edge of the box.

However, there was still time for United to hit back before half-time when Janina Minge headed the ball back towards her own box and Malard spun smartly to chip over Johannes.

After the break, Beerensteyn skewed an effort past a post and Ella Toone lofted a shot over the crossbar before Middleton-Patel made a great save to push away Beerensteyn's header.

However, the Netherlands international eventually scored her second of the evening, racing into the box and firing home in the 65th minute.

A bruising evening for United was complete in the sixth minute of stoppage-time when Endemann took advantage of a defensive error to steal the ball and tap home.
