Bellingham ends goal drought to lead Madrid past Juventus

Jude Bellingham's first goal of the season extended Real Madrid's 100 percent start to their Champions League campaign as Juventus fell by the wayside at the Santiago Bernabeu.

Bellingham's 57th-minute strike was enough to clinch a 1-0 victory for the 15-time winners and leave Igor Tudor's men with just two points from their opening three games.

Madrid were not at their fluent best ahead of Sunday's El Clasico showdown with Barcelona against a well-organised Juve, and it took a series of saves from Thibaut Courtois, making his 300th appearance for the club, to set the stage for England international Bellingham to win it.

The visitors started brightly and central defender Raúl Asencio had to to prevent Dusan Vlahovic from reaching Pierre Kalulu's seventh-minute cross after he had been picked out in space down the right.

Courtois was fully extended as he tipped Weston McKennie's shot away three minutes later and then had to get down well to claim Federico Gatti's attempt with Xabi Alonso's side struggling to find their rhythm.

Aurélien Tchouaméni directed a 15th-minute header straight at Michele Di Gregorio and sent another over the bar, both from Arda Güler corners, as the hosts started to threaten, and the midfielder then saw a 26th-minute shot deflected wide by Kalulu as the home side started to press.

However, with Kylian Mbappé and Bellingham struggling to make an impact, their biggest threat continued to come from set-pieces until Vinícius Júnior and Brahim Díaz combined to play Mbappé in to force a fine save from Di Gregorio five minutes before the restart.

Éder Militão made a vital block to deny Kalulu two minutes after the restart with the Serie A side prospering on the break once again, but the defender needed Courtois to get him out of trouble when Vlahovic raced away from him after Tchouameni's pass had been cut out.

Courtois did well to claim Andrea Cambiaso's effort after it deflected off Khephren Thuram, but the LaLiga leaders took the lead with 57 minutes gone when, after Vinícius had danced into space and seen his left-foot shot come back off a post, Bellingham pounced on the rebound to open the scoring.

With some of the pressure released, the home side looked to extend their advantage and Gatti made an important block to prevent Federico Valverde's powerfully struck 68th-minute volley from troubling Di Gregorio.

The Juve keeper made a superb double stop to deny Mbappé and then Díaz and Gatti blocked another Díaz attempt on the line, and although Asencio had to intervene to prevent Loïs Openda from levelling and Courtois beat away fellow substitute Filip Kostic's strike, Madrid ultimately saw out time to claim victory.
