Chelsea beat London City Lionesses to remain top of WSL

Chelsea remain unbeaten in the Women's Super League (WSL) after beating London City Lionesses 2-0 at Stamford Bridge.

Ellie Carpenter sent the Blues ahead with her first goal for the club, but the hosts endured a tight meeting with London City.

Chelsea had multiple chances after the break, with Aggie Beever-Jones and Erin Cuthbert coming close before Sam Kerr wrapped up three points in stoppage time.

Sonia Bompastor's side remain top of the standings with six league wins this season, while London City slip to a fourth WSL defeat.

Chelsea were immediately on the front foot as Cuthbert pounced on a loose pass and Wassa Sangaré made a great intervention to clear the ball.

The Blues took the lead six minutes in when Sandy Baltimore raced into the box and played a low ball into an unmarked Carpenter at the back post, the Australia full-back finishing tidily from inside the six-yard area.

Carpenter then broke forward and scuffed an effort over as the hosts continued to pile on the pressure and Elene Lete scooped up a tame touch from Beever-Jones.

Hannah Hampton made a comfortable claim from Isobel Goodwin's looping header and Sjoeke Nüsken nodded over at the other end.

London City had promising breaks well defended by Chelsea, who kept causing problems and tested the visitors again when Millie Bright sent a dipping strike just over the bar from distance.

Goodwin latched onto a loose ball outside of the box but fired over the crossbar, and moments later Elena Linari blasted wide.

Chelsea controlled possession after the break and Freya Godfrey suddenly had a chance for the visitors after brilliantly cutting in from the right, but her resulting cross flew wide.

Jana Fernández closed down Beever-Jones' attempted effort from the centre of the box and Cuthbert's powerful header from Carpenter's delivery was off target.

Sangare then stopped a Cuthbert shot and Beever-Jones made a great turn in the area before blasting wide as Chelsea searched for a second, with Keira Walsh and Niamh Charles the next to send shots wide of the mark.

Lotta Lindström sent a promising ball into the box for London City towards the end, but Hampton made an easy save at her near post.

Chelsea sealed three points in the fourth minute of stoppage time after Lete raced out of her goal to clear the ball only for Poppy Pattinson to miscontrol straight to the feet of Kerr, who expertly chipped the retreating goalkeeper.
