Chelsea v Leicester
Aggie Beever-Jones nets as Chelsea beat Leicester to stay perfect in WSL
Aggie Beever-Jones' early goal and a fine save from Hannah Hampton in stoppage time helped Chelsea maintain their perfect start to the new Women's Super League season with a 1-0 win over Leicester.
There was a minute's silence before kick-off at Kingsmeadow for former Liverpool and Chelsea manager Matt Beard, whose death was announced late on Saturday.
Chelsea took the lead in the seventh minute when the ball broke to Beever-Jones in a crowded penalty area.
England forward Beever-Jones set herself to turn before firing the ball past Leicester keeper Janina Leitzig from six yards to score her third WSL goal of the campaign.
Chelsea continued to press as first Ellie Carpenter shot straight at Leitzig, who then pushed away a 25-yard drive from Erin Cuthbert.
Leicester -- who beat Liverpool 1-0 in their last WSL game -- ventured forward late in the first half, but a long-range shot from Emily van Egmond dropped well over the crossbar.
Keira Walsh's fierce drive called Leitzig into action again just before half-time as Chelsea went into the break well on top.
Chelsea boss Sonia Bompastor made a couple changes for the start of the second half, as club record signing Alyssa Thompson and Maika Hamano were sent on, with Sandy Baltimore and Catarina Macario making way.
In the 47th minute, there was applause for Beard, who was replaced as Chelsea manager by Emma Hayes in 2012.
Chelsea continued to dominate possession, with Cuthbert seeing her header from Thompson's floated cross saved by Leitzig.
At the other end, Blues keeper Hampton watched a long-range effort from Julie Thibau fly well wide.
Chelsea fans cheered as Sam Kerr came on for the final 20 minutes to make a long awaited home appearance again.
The Australian international had returned to action last weekend following a lengthy lay-off with an ACL injury and scored in the 3-1 win at Aston Villa.
Leicester almost snatched an equaliser in stoppage time when substitute Rosella Ayane floated in a looping effort from the edge of the box, which England number one Hampton tipped onto the crossbar.
Van Egmond fired the rebound over from six yards, but the flag was swiftly up for offside against the Australian.
