Man United hit five as London City's tough start to WSL continues

Manchester United bounced back from their Champions League disappointment by thrashing London City Lionesses 5-1 in the Women's Super League.

Marc Skinner's five-star side returned to the top of the table three days after their first-leg European qualifying defeat against Norwegian side Brann.

First-half goals from defenders Maya Le Tissier and Jayde Riviere were added to by Melvine Malard's quickfire brace after the interval in Bromley.

Former United forward Nikita Parris scored a consolation for the hosts after Millie Turner was carried off on a stretcher before Jess Park -- making her first WSL start since arriving from Manchester City - added a brilliant fifth.

WSL newcomers London City handed a second-half debut to big-money signing Grace Geyoro, but they were given another display of the gap to the top clubs after their 4-1 defeat to European champions Arsenal last weekend.

They trailed after just three minutes.

Malard had already gone close when she was fouled by Jana Fernández in the penalty area and captain Le Tissier -- on her 100th United appearance -- smashed the resulting spot-kick down the middle.

Right-back Riviere arrowed home an effort from an acute angle on her 50th United appearance to make it 2-0 after 33 minutes.

Any hopes of a London City comeback were ended by Malard's brace in the first five minutes of the second half.

The France forward was played in by Park and slotted home from a seemingly offside position in the 47th minute before heading in left-back Anna Sandberg's cross.

United centre-back Turner was carried off just after the hour mark, having stayed down following a challenge and required lengthy treatment.

Parris scored with 14 minutes left, but Park's brilliant effort -- cutting in from the left and firing into the top corner -- rounded off an impressive United display.
