Julián Álvarez has penalty saved as Atlético drop points again

Atlético Madrid's stuttering start to the season continued as they had to settle for a 1-1 draw at Mallorca, as substitute Alexander Sorloth was sent off late on.

Diego Simeone had seen his side suffer a 3-2 stoppage-time Champions League defeat by Liverpool on Wednesday at Anfield -- where he argued with fans behind the dugout and, after being pulled away, was shown a red card.

Atlético, who had won just one of their first four LaLiga fixtures, looked to make a positive start to Sunday's match at Son Moix, where they were awarded an early penalty -- but Julián Álvarez's spot-kick was saved.

After Sorloth was shown a straight red in the 72nd minute following a VAR review for a high tackle, Conor Gallagher fired 10-man Atlético in front.

However, Mallorca secured a point when substitute Vedat Muriqi headed in with five minutes left.

The visitors had been awarded a penalty in the 12th minute when Mallorca captain Antonio Raíllo blocked Dávid Hancko's angled shot with his arm. Leo Román, though, got down to save Álvarez's spot-kick.

Shortly before the break, Román made another fine reflex save at the near post when Marcos Llorente's cross deflected off Mallorca defender Raíllo.

Román came to Mallorca's rescue again early in the second half when he beat away Álvarez's shot on the turn at point-blank range following a cutback through the penalty area from Giuliano Simeone.

The visitors were reduced to 10 men in the 72nd minute left when Sorloth was shown a straight red card for a late challenge on Raíllo, after the referee reviewed his high tackle on the pitchside monitor.

Los Colchoneros then took the lead with 11 minutes left despite being a man down.

Llorente broke clear down the right and to the edge of the box, where his low, angled shot was pushed out by Román -- but Gallagher arrived at pace into the penalty area to fire home the rebound.

Mallorca equalised in the 85th minute when substitute Muriqi, who had only just came on, powered in a header from Jan Virgili's sweeping cross.

Atlético saw out seven minutes of added time and had to settle for a third draw from five LaLiga games.

They sit 12th in the LaLiga table ahead of their clash with Rayo Vallecano on Wednesday.

Mallorca earned just their second point of the season and remain languishing in the relegation zone in 19th place. They face Real Sociedad next.
