Mbappé on target as 10-man Real Madrid beat Real Sociedad
Real Madrid made it four wins out of four to start their LaLiga campaign but had to hang on for a 2-1 win at Real Sociedad after playing almost an hour with 10 men.
Kylian Mbappé gave Xabi Alonso's side an early lead before Dean Huijsen controversially saw red in the 31st minute for denying a clear goalscoring opportunity.
Arda Güler's strike just before half-time gave Madrid breathing room and they would need it in the second half as Mikel Oyarzabal's 56th-minute penalty got the hosts back into the game and they threatened to find a late equaliser, piling on the pressure in the last 20 minutes.
Güler had the ball in the net for Madrid after only two minutes, but his strike was disallowed with Mbappé offside before setting up his team-mate for the finish.
But there was no stopping them 10 minutes later when Mbappé pounced on a mistake from Mikel Goti and delivered a clinical finish that went in off a post to leave Álex Remiro with no chance. It was the France star's 35th goal in 38 league appearances for the club.
Madrid kept pushing as Remiro had to react smartly to keep out Éder Militão's header before denying the Brazilian again moments later.
But the game changed in the 31st minute as Huijsen was sent off for bringing down Oyarzabal as he raced through on goal, his second red card in only nine games for Madrid.
Alonso was furious as he argued Militão was there as a covering defender, with the foul occurring only just inside the Madrid half, and the visiting boss was shown a yellow card for his protests.
Sociedad briefly rallied, but Madrid began to regain control and doubled their lead just before the break, with Mbappé again integral as he left Aritz Elustondo sitting on his backside before teeing up Güler to slot home.
Sociedad started the second half well and went close through both Pablo Marín and Jon Gorrotxategi before a handball from Dani Carvajal offered them a route back into the game, taken by Oyarzabal.
Mbappé went close again in the 69th minute as Madrid sought to put the game to bed, but Sociedad stayed alive and, with the extra man, turned up the heat in the final 20 minutes.
Arsen Zakharyan and Ander Barrenetxea both saw chances blocked before Thibaut Courtois denied Oyarzabal.
As the game moved into the final five minutes Sociedad kept applying the pressure, with Courtois saving from Duje Caleta-Car before Takefusa Kubo fired wide.
Jon Karrikaburu and Jon Aramburu both saw shots blocked during six minutes of time added on as Madrid dug deep to hang on to their lead.
