Atlético's wait for first win of new season goes on with Alavés draw

Carlos Vicente's penalty ensured Atlético Madrid wait for a first win of the new LaLiga season goes on after they were held to a 1-1 draw at Alavés.

The midfielder's spot-kick cancelled out Giuliano Simeone's opener and ensured Diego Simeone's men emerged with just a single point to show for their efforts for the second week in succession after their opening-day defeat at Espanyol.

Alaves goalkeeper Antonio Sivera had already saved from Thiago Almada when he had to pick the ball out of his net with just seven minutes gone after Simeone had rounded off a pacy break.

However, they were back in it within seven minutes when, after Atléti striker Alexander Sørloth had been penalised for a challenge inside his own box, Vicente converted the resulting spot-kick to make it 1-1.

Toni Martínez and Dávid Hancko traded efforts as both sides continued to push but neither looked like adding to their tally as the game reached half-time with the sides still locked together.

Martinez at one end and Pablo Barrios at the other were unable to make the most of half-chances as the second half, which was halted briefly for a medical emergency in the stands at the Estadio de Mendizorroza, unfolded in much the same vein.

However, Sivera had to pluck a Sorloth header out of his top corner with 14 minutes remaining and Antoine Griezmann saw his attempt come back off the upright seconds later.

Sivera denied Julián Álvarez, Marcos Llorente and Giacomo Raspadori as the clock -- including 15 minutes of stoppage time -- ran down but ultimately the points were shared.
