PSG drop Ligue 1 points against promoted Lorient

Paris Saint-Germain were held to a frustrating 1-1 draw at Lorient in Ligue 1 on Wednesday.

Nuno Mendes had fired PSG in front at the start of the second half.

Lorient, though, were soon back on level terms through a fine strike from defender Igor Silva in the 51st minute.

Ousmane Dembélé returned to the PSG starting XI following his hamstring injury and was soon into the action at the Stade du Moustoir, cutting a dangerous ball back across the six-yard box which was deflected behind.

Lorient, who have lost five league games since being promoted, threatened when winger Dermane Karim got space on the edge of the box but dragged his shot wide.

PSG continued to dominate possession, but struggled to break down a determined home defence as the first half went on.

Lorient created another opening when Joel Mvuka broke down the right and curled in a low, 20-yard effort which PSG goalkeeper Lucas Chevalier got down to save.

PSG finally tested Lorient keeper Yvon Mvogo five minutes before the break when Warren Zaïre-Emery fed Mendes, whose right-foot strike was punched away.

Mvogo then had to be alert after Ibrahim Mbaye cut in from the left and unleased a low, angled drive.

PSG broke the deadlock four minutes into the second half.

Désiré Doué sent over a cross from the right, which Mendes met with a glancing header at the far post. Although Mvogo made a reaction save, the ball dropped back to Mendes, who lashed it in from close range.

Lorient, however, were soon back on level terms.

Arsène Kouassi burst forward down the left and then into the penalty area before his angled shot was pushed away by Chevalier.

Lorient defender Silva had pushed up to the edge of the penalty area, from where he rifled a low shot back into the far corner.

PSG saw Doue forced off by injury just after the hour before first Vitinha and then substitute Bradley Barcola had goal-bound shots well saved by Mvogo.

Lorient almost snatched all three points when Théo Le Bris sent a rising effort just over the top right corner.
