Ethan Mbappe scores late equaliser as Lille draw with PSG

Ethan Mbappé scored late against his former club as Lille snatched a 1-1 draw against champions Paris Saint-Germain on Sunday.

The 18-year-old brother of former PSG star Kylian Mbappé came off the bench to equalise five minutes from the end of a tight Ligue 1 contest at the Decathlon Arena.

Nuno Mendes had given PSG the lead with a superb free-kick midway through the second half.

Mbappe, who was on the books at PSG before World Cup winner Kylian left for Real Madrid last year, scored his first goal for Lille last month as he bids to break out of his brother's shadow.

His latest effort grabbed the headlines from what was a largely tame contest featuring a PSG side much changed from their midweek Champions League outing at Barcelona.

The home side threatened briefly in the first half as Thomas Meunier had a couple of efforts blocked and Olivier Giroud headed at former Lille goalkeeper Lucas Chevalier.

At the other end, Lucas Hernández and Senny Mayulu failed to trouble Berke Özer when well placed and Bradley Barcola spurned a good chance when he shot wide.

Giroud missed the target for Lille early in the second half before teeing up Nabil Bentaleb for a chance which Chevalier, on his first return to his old club since leaving in the summer, kept out.

The pace quickened and Ozer was alert to deny Lee Kang-in and Barcola, who also fired another effort over.

There were further PSG chances for Lee and Warren Zaïre-Emery but neither could take advantage.

The deadlock was broken in spectacular fashion by Mendes in the 66th minute.

It came after Achraf Hakimi was fouled by Ayyoub Bouaddi 30 yards from goal.

Lille put only two men in a wall and Mendes brilliantly lifted a curling left-footed effort over them and into the top corner.

The hosts almost produced a quick response as Matias Fernandez-Pardo shot narrowly wide from the left after being picked out by Benjamin André.

PSG could have increased their lead but Lee shot over from distance and was denied by Ozer before Gonçalo Ramos headed wide from a corner.

Hakimi also shot the wrong side of the post and the European champions were made to rue those misses as Lille struck back late on.

Mbappe had been on the field just four minutes when he cut inside from the right-hand side of the area and drilled a low shot across goal.

The ball took an awkward bounce in front of Chevalier and found its way into the bottom corner.
