Pulisic misses penalty in goalless draw between Juventus and Milan

Christian Pulisic missed a penalty as AC Milan and Juventus played out a goalless draw at the Allianz Stadium.

The U.S. winger was presented with the golden opportunity early in the second half but sent his spot-kick high over the bar.

Massimiliano Allegri returned to Juventus for the first time since his sacking last May hoping to guide his current side back to the top of the Serie A table.

But the draw leaves them two points behind leading pair Napoli and Roma, with Juve a point further back.

A cagey first half saw only brief glimpses of goal for either side, with the best opportunity coming just before the break when Strahinja Pavlovic's cross was met by a flicked header from Santiago Gimenez that flew just wide.

Mike Maignan had had little to do in the Milan goal but he produced a brilliant save three minutes after the break, somehow keeping out Federico Gatti's point-blank volley.

Five minutes later, Milan looked set to take the lead when the referee pointed to the spot after Luka Modric played a ball over the top and Gimenez went down under Lloyd Kelly's clumsy challenge.

Pulisic will not want to see a replay of his wayward effort and the winger tried to make amends immediately with a shot from the edge of the box that was comfortably saved by Michele Di Gregorio.

It was just the second time in his professional career that Pulisic missed from the spot, having had a penalty saved by Vanja Milinkovic-Savic against Torino last February.

Allegri sent on Rafael Leão and the Portugal forward had Di Gregorio scrambling with an audacious effort from inside his own half before snatching at a much better opportunity when he was picked out at the back post by Pulisic.

Heading into injury time, Leao had another glorious chance after he was played through by Modric but Di Gregorio saved his scuffed effort before Ruben Loftus-Cheek's follow-up was blocked.
