Sweden v Spain
Putellas helps Spain ease past Sweden into Nations League final
Alexia Putellas struck the only goal of the game as holders Spain beat Sweden 1-0 in Gothenburg on Tuesday to book their place in the final of the UEFA Women's Nations League courtesy of a 5-0 aggregate win.
Putellas, who scored twice in Spain's 4-0 semifinal first leg win last week, finished brilliantly just inside the box in the 75th minute after good work from Barcelona teammate Clàudia Pina.
World champions Spain will now meet Germany in the final later this year after they emerged victorious from the other semifinal against France later on Tuesday.
La Roja's victory over Sweden seals an impressive start for new coach Sonia Bermúdez, who replaced Montse Tomé after the Euro 2025 final defeat to England.
These were Bermúdez's first games in charge since she took over and the performances in both games will give her plenty of cause for optimism.
Both displays were very different. While Spain took Sweden apart in Malaga last Friday, they had to show a more patient side to their game at the Gamla Ullevi.
In a match of few chances, the best opening of the first half felt to Spain defender Irene Paredes, who headed a Mapi León cross wide when she was left unmarked at the far post.
Substitute Cristina Martín-Prieto lobbed wide after the break as both teams struggled to break the deadlock before Sweden finally opened up a bit more.
Stina Blackstenius had a penalty shout turned down when she tangled with León and the Arsenal striker then fired straight at Cata Coll, although the offside flag belatedly went up anyway.
Putellas then took advantage of the space that had opened up late on, curling her 40th Spain goal into the top corner after Pina had picked her out.
Sweden could have salvaged a draw late on, with Coll making a double save from Filippa Angeldal and Evelyn Ijeh, but the tie had long been lost for Sweden, who like Spain were also taking their first steps under a new coach in Tony Gustavsson.
