United States stuns France to book U20 WC knockout spot

The United States clinched a spot in the knockout round of the U20 World Cup with a stunning 3-0 win over France in ChileĀ on Thursday.

A flurry of late -- and deserved -- goals from Zavier Gozo, Brooklyn Raines and Marcos Zambrano-Delgado put Marko Mitrovic's side on six points after two games following a record 9-1 win over New Caledonia on Monday.

An evenly contested first half ended scoreless, but the U.S. sprang to life in the second with Benjamin Cremaschi firing a good chance right at France keeper Lisandru Olmeta in the 61st minute before Francis Westfield flashed a header from an ensuing corner just wide of the far post.

Westfield had another great chance to put the U.S. in front just after the 80-minute mark, but he blazed over the crossbar from close range after bringing down a deft ball over the French defense from Joshua Wynder.

The goal that seemed like it would come finally did in the 85th minute when Gozo headed in a fine cross from Luke Brennan.

Gozo then set up Raines for his goal -- a curled effort from 10 yards out -- before Zambrano-Delgado blasted past Olmeta from a rebound to seal the win.

It was the second time the U.S. had beaten France at the U20 World Cup after a 3-2 win in the round of 16 in Poland in 2019.
