England out of U19 Euros after loss to Netherlands
England have been knocked out of the UEFA European Under-19 Championship at the group stage after a 4-2 loss to the Netherlands in Bucharest on Friday.
Despite the convincing defeat, it looked as if England might sneak through to the semifinals as Group B runner-up. However, a stoppage-time winner from Germany against Norway in the other final game of the group meant Germany progressed behind the Netherlands at England's expense.
England, who drew with Norway in their opener, had come from 5-1 down to secure a thrilling 5-5 draw with Germany in their previous match.
There were no such heroics on Friday, however. Kees Smit, Zepiqueno Redmond and Lucas Vennegoor Of Hesselink all scored to put the Dutch 3-0 up and in firm control at halftime.
Manchester United's Ethan Wheatley and substitute Jesse Derry, from Crystal Palace, scored to make it a more respectable scoreline for Will Antwi's young England side, but a second goal from Redmond in between ensured a Dutch win and top spot in the group.
The Netherlands will now meet hosts Romania in the semifinals on Monday.
