Chucky Lozano scored on a header in the fifth minute of second-half stoppage time to give San Diego FC a dramatic 2-1 victory over the LA Galaxy on Saturday afternoon at Snapdragon Stadium.
The Galaxy misplayed a ball in the midfield to set up the decisive tally. San Diego capitalized as Anders Dreyer sent a cross into the box and Lozano headed it into the right corner of the net.
The late breakdown saw the Galaxy continue their dubious record for the longest winless start in MLS history, now at 15 games with 11 of those results being losses. Diego Fagundez scored the Galaxy goal.
Luca de la Torre also scored for San Diego FC (8-4-3, 27 points), who have a five-match unbeaten streak (4-0-1). The expansion team has beaten the Galaxy twice this season and LAFC, winning all three of its games against the neighbors to the north.
In their MLS debut on Feb. 22, San Diego notched a 2-0 road victory over the defending MLS champion Galaxy.
The hosts had a 14-9 edge in shots on Saturday and a 3-1 advantage in shots on target.
San Diego's AnĂbal Godoy put a left-footed half-volley attempt over the net in the 81st minute.
Los Angeles had a big opportunity to take the lead in the 89th minute, but Marco Reus sent a left-footer over the net.
The Galaxy struck in the 40th minute when Reus sent a pass across the field to Fagundez, who curled a right-footed shot into the net.
It took San Diego FC just one minute to knot the score. Jeppe Tverskov slid a pass ahead to De la Torre, who slotted a shot past Galaxy keeper Novak Micovic.
The Galaxy had chances early on when San Diego goalkeeper Carlos Dos Santos crept out of his box, Maya Yoshida fired from the midfield line and the ball was just wide of the net in the third minute. Seven minutes later, Joseph Paintsil's right-footed shot went over the net.
San Diego missed three solid chances in the first half. Lozano's header went over the net in the 19th minute, Godoy's left-footer was wide in the 33rd minute and De la Torre missed with a right-footed shot in the 34th minute.
San Diego visits Seattle Sounders FC on Wednesday and the Galaxy host the San Jose Earthquakes.
