STORY: Daichi Kamada struck twice in the first half as Japan cruised to a 6-0 victory over Indonesia on Tuesday (June 10), wrapping up their AFC World Cup qualifiying campaign with a dominant performance in Group C.
Hajime Moriyasu’s side, already assured of qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, finished their group stage with seven wins from 10 matches.
Kamada opened the scoring in the 15th minute with a well-placed header, before Takefuso Kubo doubled the lead four minutes later. The Crystal Palace forward then netted his second deep into first-half stoppage time, capping a move orchestrated by Kubo and Yuki Mito.
Japan continued to dominate after the break. Ryoya Morishita volleyed in the fourth in the 55th minute, and Shuto Machino added a fifth just three minutes later following a deft assist from Kubo.
Substitute Mao Hosoya completed the rout in the 81st minute, firing home after a surging run and cross from Kota Tawaratsumida.
It is Indonesia's heaviest defeat to Japan but it is also the first defeat under new manager Patrick Kluivert. The former Dutch international will hope he can still help the team qualify for next year's world cup when the teams who did not autmoatically qualify face each compete in a play-off for the final AFC spot.
