Wolves boost survival hopes with 2-1 win at Southampton
Wolverhampton Wanderers beat bottom side Southampton 2-1 at St Mary's Stadium on Saturday as the visitors took a giant step towards Premier League survival thanks to a double from Jørgen Strand Larsen.
Although Southampton had the brighter start, Wolves opened the scoring against the run of play when Jean-Ricner Bellegarde floated in a cross towards the penalty spot where Strand Larsen flicked a header past Saints goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale in the 19th minute.
The Wolves pair combined again two minutes into the second half when Bellegarde found Strand Larsen after they won back the ball in midfield and the Norwegian forward pulled the trigger to find the bottom left corner once again.
Paul Onuachu made it 2-1 when he followed up to fire home from a rebound off the post in the 75th but Wolves held on for a nervy win to move nine points clear of 18th-placed Ipswich Town while Southampton remain bottom with nine points.
