Esther González slots in the goal for NJ/NY Gotham FC

Delanie Sheehan and Esther González each found the back of the net as NJ/NY Gotham FC defeated the Seattle Reign FC 2-0 at Lumen Field in the first Monday night match of the season. The win strengthened Gotham's position near the top of the NWSL standings (third place), while Seattle remained in 11th place with a loss that snapped its three-game winning streak.

Sheehan opened the scoring for Gotham (12-4-4) in the 41st minute with a left-footed shot from the center of the box that beat Reign goalkeeper Claudia Dickey to her bottom right corner. Despite several attempts by Seattle (5-5-10) to equalize, including shots from Tziarra King and Shae Holmes in the first half, the Reign were unable to break through.

Seattle had multiple opportunities early in the second half but failed to capitalize. Three consecutive corners between minutes 52 and 55 did not yield any goals. Meanwhile, Gotham doubled its lead in the 85th minute when González scored with a right-footed shot into the top right corner after an assist from Yazmeen Ryan.

Goalkeeper Ann-Katrin Berger was instrumental in maintaining Gotham's clean sheet with crucial saves late into stoppage time against efforts by Ji So-Yun, among others.

Up next: The Houston Dash will host Seattle Reign FC on Saturday at Shell Energy Stadium (NWSL+), while NJ/NY Gotham FC faces the Utah Royals on Sunday at Red Bull Arena (ESPN2 & ESPN+).
