Andi Sullivan's PK puts Spirit ahead

Washington takes a 1-0 lead over Utah as Andi Sullivan converts a penalty kick.

The Washington Spirit secured a narrow 2-1 victory over the Utah Royals on Saturday at Audi Field. Andi Sullivan and Ouleymata Sarr were pivotal for the Spirit, with Sullivan converting an early penalty and Sarr adding another goal before halftime. Ally Sentnor scored the lone goal for the Royals.

Sullivan opened the scoring in the 21st minute on a penalty kick after Croix Bethune was fouled inside the box by Olivia Griffitts. The Spirit doubled their lead just minutes later when Trinity Rodman delivered a precise cross that found Sarr, who headed it into the top right corner of the net.

Rodman provided two assists, and goalkeeper Aubrey Kingsbury made several crucial saves to maintain Washington's lead.

Sentnor gave Utah hope with her long-range strike midway through the second half, assisted by Dana Foederer. Despite late pressure from the Royals -- including shots from Brecken Mozingo and Cameron Tucker -- their efforts fell short as Kingsbury stood firm between Washington's posts.

Goalkeeper Mandy Haught kept Utah competitive with key stops against Washington's relentless attacks led primarily by Rodman and Sarr.
