Messi nets 2 in last home game as Argentina win

Argentina beat Venezuela 3-0 on Thursday night as Lionel Messi scored two goals in his final competitive home match in front of his country's fans in Buenos Aires.

Messi scored a sublime goal to kick things off, before Lautaro Martínez doubled Argentina's lead in the second half. Messi then added his second of the game to seal the World Cup qualifying win for the home side, who have already secured their spot.

The result also helped Uruguay, Colombia and Paraguay clinch their spots in the World Cup in the next-to-last round of South American qualifiers.

The Uruguayans and Colombians had 3-0 wins Thursday, and the Paraguayans had a scoreless draw to advance to the global tournament along with Argentina, Brazil and Ecuador.

Peru, who needed wins in the last two rounds to advance, are now out of contention following the loss to Uruguay.

James Rodríguez opened the scoring for Colombia in the 31st minute while John Cordoba and Juan Fernando Quintero added second-half goals to secure the win over Bolovia.
