Tammy Abraham strikes late as England U21s beat China to open Toulon defence
Tammy Abraham spared England Under-21s' blushes as they beat China 2-1 in their opening group game of the Toulon Tournament.
The Young Lions are trying to win the competition in the south of France for a third successive year, but they were labouring towards a draw until Abraham swept home from close range in the final minute.
It was a disappointing first half for Aidy Boothroyd's men and they fell behind in the 20th minute when Dinghao Yan sent a looping header into the far corner.
The second half was one-way traffic as England tried to get back into the game and they found a leveller seven minutes after the restart when Middlesbrough defender Dael Fry headed home Abraham's knockdown.
China were holding firm as England spurned chance after chance, but their plight was made tougher late on when Weizhe Sun saw red for a reckless tackle on Hamza Choudhury.
And England made their numerical advantage count in the final minute of the regulation 80 when Chelsea's Abraham tucked home Adam Armstrong's cross for the winner.
