Manu Tuilagi has been ruled out of England's autumn internationals with a knee injury.

Tuilagi, 26, made a try-scoring return to action for Leicester against Bath on Sunday following an injury-hit spell that has restricted him to just 17 Tigers appearances in three years.

The centre was sent home from England's preseason get together last month following a drinking session with teammate Denny Solomona but coach Eddie Jones insisted on Tuesday that the door remained open for a recall.

However, Tuilagi's name will not feature in Jones' squad for the November games against Argentina, Australia and Samoa after Leicester confirmed he would undergo surgery on a strained meniscus in his left knee.

Tuilagi is due to have surgery on Thursday, with the Tigers estimating his recovery time to be 12 weeks. That would rule out a return to action until Dec. 2, when the Tigers face Wasps at the Ricoh Arena.

"This is not the knee that Manu injured last season and this is not a major injury in the context of what kept him out for the first half of this year," Tigers head coach Matt O'Connor told the club's website.

"Manu has worked really hard with the medical and conditioning teams to come back from long-term injury and was starting to find his feet again on the pitch, but he's just been very unlucky with this one.

"It was an innocuous bump, a freak incident in the game. On closer inspection there is some damage to the meniscus which needs to be addressed. We look forward to having him back at the end of his recovery period."
