Karsten Warholm wins 400 meter hurdles at Golden Spike meet

OSTRAVA, Czech Republic -- Two-time world champion Karsten Warholm of Norway easily won the men's 400 meter hurdles at the Golden Spike meet on Tuesday, although he couldn't challenge the world record this time.

Warholm clocked 47.62 seconds but said he'd been hoping to run faster after finishing the distance in 46.87 in Stockholm last month. That was the second best time in history, only 0.09 seconds behind the world record set by American Kevin Young at the 1992 Olympics in Barcelona.

"I was a bit surprised with the time, I thought it was better," Warholm said. "I pushed all the way through, but that's sport."

About 3,000 spectators were allowed to attend the 59th edition of the meet because of the government's restrictions to contain the coronavirus pandemic. The event is part of the newly established World Athletics Continental Tour Gold circuit.

World and Olympic champion Christian Taylor of the United States leaped a world-leading 17.46 meters to win the men's triple jump, while fellow American Ryan Crouser extended his dominance in the men's shot put this season by winning with a throw of 22.43 meters.

Dutch runner Sifan Hassan used her strong finish on the final lap to take the women's 5,000 in 14:37.85, while Jakob Ingebrigtsen of Norway won the men's 1,500 in 3:33.92.

In a rarely contested race, two-time 200 meter world champion Dafne Schippers of the Netherlands won the women's 150 meters in 16.56.
