UK Sport, the government body in charge of allocating spending to British sporting bodies, has said that UK Athletics will have its funding decreased as it re-allocates money to other sports.
The body will grant a record £330 million to Team GB for the LA 2028 Olympics and Paralympics -- the most ever for a four-year cycle -- but sees UK Athletics face an 8% decrease in its funding from £22.2m to £20.5m.
Canoeing also saw a slight decrease, while rowing was granted the biggest increase, seeing it's funding grow from £22.7m to £24.9m.
"Following the spectacular performances of Team GB and ParalympicsGB in Paris this summer, it's so important for us to be able to keep the momentum going as we head into the LA cycle," Dr Kate Baker, director of performance at UK Sport said. "This is our greatest investment to date, with more sports set to embark on an Olympic and Paralympic campaign with us than ever before."
Team GB won 10 medals in track and field during Paris 2024, including a gold for Keely Hodgkinson in the women's 800-metres. The body also said it will support four new sports: flag football, lacrosse, para climbing and squash, as well as baseball/softball, which had some funding during the previous cycle.
"With every Games cycle comes new sports and athletes with new stories to tell and inspiration to share," Baker added. "With our investment supporting more breadth than ever before, as well as the entertainment, drama and spectacle we'll no doubt experience from a Games taking place in LA, I can't wait to see what our athletes can achieve in four years' time."
