LIMA, Peru -- Competition at the 2019 Pan American Games has drawn to a close, with the United States dominating the medal count in every which way with a total of 293 -- 120 gold, 88 silver and 85 bronze.
Brazil was second with 171 total medals, and Mexico third at 136. Canada is the only other country to come in at triple digits with 152, and host Peru finishe dwith 39 -- including 11 gold.
The Chilean capital of Santiago will be on the clock to host the Americas' largest sporting event in 2023 when Sunday's closing ceremonies mark an end to the 17 days of Lima 2019.
U.S. athletes face discipline after protests
The Pan American Games aren't immune to the wave of protests conducted by American athletes during the national anthem.
Fencer Race Imboden and hammer thrower Gwen Berry face possible repercussions from the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Committee for their protests over the weekend during their medal ceremonies at the 2019 Pan American Games.
Imboden, a two-time Olympian, took a knee on the medal stand as a member of the men's team foil that won gold Friday. Berry raised a fist during the Star-Spangled Banner after winning her event Saturday.

Bodybuilding flexes its muscles in Lima
Bodybuidling made its debut Saturday at the Pan American Games to a crowd that included the sport's delegates and curious onlookers. El Salvador swept the two events -- men's classic bodybuilding and women's bikini fitness -- with Paulina Zamora and Yuri Rodriguez winning the inaugural gold medals

Women's softball brings home gold
The U.S. women's softball team took the long way to the gold at the 2019 Pan American Games, but they got there.
After losing to Canada in Friday's semifinals with direct passage to the grand final at stake, the U.S. first beat Puerto Rico in the bronze medal game, 3-1, before getting the best of Canada in the rematch, also 3-1, on Saturday to win the tournament.
Monica Abbott went the seven-inning distance, striking out 10 while allowing just one run. Right fielder Michelle Moultrie drove in two for the Americans, who had a 7-1 run through Lima.
It is the ninth Pan American gold medal for the U.S., which has finished no worse than second in every year since the sport was introduced at the San Juan Games in 1979. The team has already qualified for the Tokyo 2020 and will name its Olympic roster in the fall.
Team USA worked on forging its identity while in Lima.
Final tally for U.S. swimmers: 44 medals
U.S. swim teams closed their participation in Lima 2019 on Saturday and bring home 44 medals, including 21 golds.
Daniel Carr, Nic Fink, Tom Shields and Nathan Adrian wrapped things up a gold in the men's 400-meter medley relay with a time of 3:30.25. It was the fifth medal of the games for Adrian, who is recovering from testicular cancer.

Women's basketball settles for silver
The U.S. women's basketball team stood toe to toe with a veteran Brazil team for three quarters but couldn't match its energy down the stretch, losing 79-73 Saturday night in the gold-medal game at the 2019 Pan American Games.
Texas A&M's Chennedy Carter and Miami's Beatrice Mompremier led the way for the U.S. with 16 points apiece.
Americans close out wrestling with four medals
Jordan Burroughs, Kyle Snyder and Nick Gwiazdowski won gold and James Downey bronze for U.S. wrestlers Saturday.
Burroughs beat Puerto Rico's Franklin Gomez in the 74 kg final for his third Pan American gold, and Snyder topped Venezuela's Jose Diaz to defend his 97 kg Pan Am title. Gwiazdowski capped the night with a win over Cuba's Oscar Pino in the 125 kg final.
Downey defeated Canada's Alexander Moore in his bronze-medal bout.
Eve Jobs comes close to earning second medal
Eve Jobs, the daughter of Apple co-founder Steve Jobs, settled for a fifth-place finish in jumping individual aboard Venue d'Fees des Hazalles after a jump-off for the bronze. Her time in the jump-off was 46.66; her U.S. teammate, Elizabeth Madden aboard Breitling LS, won the four-way jump-off with a time of 42.47.
USA relay teams finish third in 4x100 relays
Both U.S. 4x100-meter track teams earned bronze in their respective races Friday.
The men's team of Jarret Eaton, Cravon Gillespie, Bryce Robinson and Mike Rodgers as the anchor scored bronze with a time of 38.79. Brazil won gold with a 28.27, and Trinidad and Tobago got the silver at 38.46.
For the women, the team of Chanel Brissett, Twanisha Terry, Shania Collins and Lynna Irby finished third at 43.39, behind Brazil's 43.04 and Canada's 43.37.
On Wednesday, Rodgers didn't let the consistently cool weather in Lima slow him down too much in winning the men's 100-meter final with a time of 10.09.
"It was cold. I didn't think I was going to run that fast, and I was kind of cramping in the beginning," Rodgers said. "Start wasn't the best today, but I just focused on my race and just outexecuted everybody and that's how I got the win today."
Jersey mix-up ends Argentina's medal chances
Argentina's women's basketball team had to forfeit its match against Colombia at the Pan American Games on Wednesday for wearing the wrong uniform color and can no longer advance to the medal rounds. It also led to the resignation of two of the team's officials.

American track legend Carl Lewis, who will hand out medals as a special guest at the 2019 Pan American Games, spoke Monday in Lima with ESPN's Bernardo Osuna.

Colombia's Ibarguen out with foot injury
Colombia's Caterine Ibarguen is out because of a foot injury, her coach said, ending her two-time reign in the triple jump at the Pan American Games.
The confirmation came after Ibarguen, 35, fell short of a medal Tuesday in the long jump.

A U.S. gold in men's basketball will have to wait another four years, but the young roster of mostly Big East stars managed a bronze with a win Sunday over the Dominican Republic. Argentina, led by former NBA player Luis Scola, won the gold with a comfortable 84-66 defeat of Puerto Rico.

U.S. men earn silver in softball
Despite three opportunities to do so at the 2019 Pan American Games, the U.S. men's softball team couldn't solve world champion Argentina. The third of those chances came in Thursday's gold-medal game, where Argentina scored a 5-0 victory.
This is the eighth silver for the U.S. in the nine occasions that men's softball has been in the Pan American lineup. It's also the first time a team other than Canada wins the gold in the discipline.
The U.S. was outscored 15-0 by Argentina in the tournament and managed just nine hits -- four total in the last two meetings. Matthew Ratliff and Cameron Schiller were the only ones to graze Argentina's Huemul Mata, who struck out nine in going the distance Thursday. Mervin Weiler went 4 2/3 innings, allowing five runs and nine hits while striking out eight in the loss.
The men's softball success of Argentina, which won bronze in the previous two Pan American Games, has been a long time in the making.
U.S. teams seize first 3x3 basketball gold medals
Oregon teammates Sabrina Ionescu and Ruthy Hebard scored seven points apiece Monday in guiding the U.S. women's 3x3 basketball team 21-17 over Argentina to win the first Pan American Games gold medal in the discipline.
The U.S. men joined them as Pan American champions shortly after with a 21-19 win over Puerto Rico. Jonathan Octeus and Sheldon Jeter (on 5-of-6 shooting) led the way with eight points each.

The one-year countdown to the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo began July 24, but fans in the Americas can already get a sneak peek at some of the big names who will participate beginning this week at the Pan American Games in Peru.
Lima 2019 lit its torch on July 26, offering a modern touch to its lineup with new sports such as bodybuilding and surfing to go with the usual slate of Olympic-style competitions. Two offerings new to the Olympic lineup -- 3x3 basketball and surfing -- got a test run in Lima.
The Games feature 39 sports and 61 disciplines. A total of 6,680 athletes from 41 delegations are expected to compete. The U.S. is sending 643 athletes, ranging in age from 15-year-old archer Casey Kaufhold to sailor Ian Jones, 57. The American group also consists of 91 Olympians, 34 of whom have won medals, including swimmer Nathan Adrian.

Pan American Games schedule
The Games began on July 26 and run through Aug. 11. ESPNU and ESPN Deportes (Spanish) will televise the Games in the U.S. See the TV/stream programming schedule here.
Lowdown on Lima
The Peruvian capital -- the third-largest city in the Americas with a population of more than 9 million -- was awarded the 2019 Pan American Games six years ago. Lima, with its reputation for good weather and good food, is located in the central part of Peru and sits on the coast overlooking the Pacific Ocean. It is hosting the Pan Am Games for the first time.
Peru has hosted other major sporting events, including six Copa America soccer tournaments, the FIFA U17 World Cup in 2005 and the Women's Volleyball World Championships in 1982.
The capital's Estadio Nacional will open and close the Pan American Games, with the other venues divided among six clusters in and around Lima.
Pan American Games' featured venues
The Escuela Militar de Chorrillos, a venue located in a military school, will host the new bodybuilding discipline, as well as modern pentathlon and weightlifting.
The beach known as Punta Rocas, a popular surfing destination in the Punta Negra district about an hour south of the capital, will host the sport. The venue has a capacity for 1,200 spectators.

What's new for Peru?
Bodybuilding, 3x3 basketball and surfing make their Pan American Games debuts. The last two will be featured in the Tokyo lineup.
While baseball and softball return to the Olympics next year, men's softball -- back after a 16-year absence from the Pan Ams -- will grab the spotlight usually reserved for U.S. baseball, which is not participating in Lima.
Skateboarding, which is set to make its Olympic debut next year, was pulled from the Lima lineup in May after Pan Am organizers accused the sport's governing bodies of not fulfilling requirements on the qualification system.
Racquetball, roller skating and bowling are the other Pan American Games sports that will not be part of the Olympic program.

The U.S. gymnastics team. It will consist of Morgan Hurd, Riley McCusker, Kara Eaker, Leanne Wong and Aleah Finnegan, with Shilese Jones as the alternate.
U.S. swimmer Nathan Adrian, who is competing again after revealing in January that he has been diagnosed with testicular cancer.
Mexican women's racquetball player Paola Longoria, who has won six gold medals in six events over the past two Pan American Games.
Sabrina Ionescu won gold for the U.S. women in 3x3 basketball before embarking on what is expected to be a record-setting senior season at Oregon.
Jamaican sprinters Elaine Thompson and Shelly Ann Fraser-Pryce, who between them have won the past three Olympic gold medals in the women's 100 meters.
Brazilian gymnast Arthur Zanetti, who won gold on the rings at the 2012 Olympics and silver four years later in Rio.

Things to know
The United States is the all-time medal leader at the Pan American Games with 4,420, including 1,944 golds. Cuba is second with a 2,026 total, and Canada third with 1,915. This is the 18th edition of the Games, which have taken place every four years since 1951.
This is the first time Peru is hosting the Pan American Games. Mexico and Canada have hosted the Games three times each, while Argentina, the U.S. and Brazil have each done so twice. Colombia, Puerto Rico, Venezuela, Cuba and the Dominican Republic have all hosted once.
The Pan American Games will offer 22 Olympic qualifiers for the athletes gathered. American participants in Lima will be seeking Olympic qualification in 13 sports: archery, diving, equestrian, field hockey, karate, modern pentathlon, sailing, shooting, surfing, synchronized swimming, team handball, tennis and water polo.
To celebrate its athletes in the Paralympic movement, the organization formerly known as the U.S. Olympic Committee changed its name to the U.S. Olympic & Paralympic Committee last month. The Parapan American Games for athletes with disabilities follow a couple of weeks after the Pan American Games in Lima, from Aug. 23 through Sept. 1.
The Chilean capital of Santiago was chosen as host for the 2023 Pan American Games. Santiago was elected unanimously in 2017 after Buenos Aires withdrew its candidacy.
