Sunday's Super Bowl LIX rematch produced the same winner as seven months ago in New Orleans.
Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs hosted the reigning Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City's home opener. It marked the 11th Super Bowl rematch in the following season and the third consecutive season a rematch occurred.
Mahomes threw for 187 yards and one touchdown, and added one on the ground. He was also the Chiefs' leading rusher with 66 yards, but Jalen Hurts also had a rushing touchdown en route to the Eagles' 20-17 win.
Philadelphia scored first thanks to a 13-yard rushing touchdown from Saquon Barkley at the end of the first quarter. The Chiefs responded with Mahomes' 13-yard rushing touchdown to even the score at 10 at the half.
Hurts and the Eagles deployed the tush push in the second half and maintained a 10-point lead until near the end of the fourth quarter.
Mahomes attempted a late-game comeback, though. Kansas City's offensive linemen bought the Chiefs quarterback time to scan the field and fire a 49-yard pass to wide receiver Tyquan Thornton in the end zone, shrinking the deficit to three points.
Kansas City then attempted an onside kick, but Philadelphia recovered to seal the win. The Chiefs are 0-2 for the first time since 2015 when they had a 3-5 record heading into their bye week, according to ESPN Research.
