FLORHAM PARK, N.J. -- Justin Fields was carted off the practice field Thursday morning with a dislocated right toe, although the New York Jets said the quarterback avoided suffering a serious injury.

Fields is expected to be ready for Week 1 against the Pittsburgh Steelers, a source told ESPN. The Jets said Fields would not miss significant time and is considered day-to-day.

Jets coach Aaron Glenn, speaking after practice, declined to speculate on the severity of the injury, saying he was waiting for test results.

By noon ET Thursday, there was a sense of relief around the Jets, who have been cursed by a spate of preseason and early-season quarterback injuries in recent years. The most recent calamity occurred in the 2023 opener, when Aaron Rodgers tore his left Achilles on the fourth snap of the game.

The downside to Fields' injury is that he will miss training camp reps, invaluable for him because he hasn't played a lot of football over the past year. He started the first six games last season for the Steelers before he was replaced by Russell Wilson. Fields is learning a new offensive system and trying to build chemistry with new teammates.

Journeyman Tyrod Taylor, who has 58 career starts, will run the offense while Fields is out.

The injury happened on Day 2 of training camp, at 9:25 a.m. Fields pulled up after rolling right and throwing an incomplete short pass to tight end Jeremy Ruckert. Fields went down, sat on the ground briefly and limped off the field with the assistance of a trainer.

Fields spent a few minutes in the injury tent before a cart arrived on the scene. Fields was taken to the locker room, sitting in the passenger seat of the cart, before walking into the team facility under his own power.

Glenn said he suspected Fields was hurt when his foot was stepped on by a teammate but that he needed to see the film.

"When anybody goes down, there's a lump in my throat," Glenn said. "I hate injuries for any player. But the thing is, I want to make sure exactly what the injury is before I move forward on my thought process."

Fields, who signed a two-year, $40 million contract as a free agent, is the Jets' undisputed starter. Taylor, 35, replaced him in team drills Thursday.

The Jets also have Adrian Martinez, the 2024 United Football League MVP, and rookie Brady Cook on their roster, but neither has thrown a pass in an NFL game.

"I think the most important part is, if anything does happen to Justin, I don't think there's any drop-off as far as what we want to do when it comes to play," Glenn said.
