BUFFALO, N.Y. -- The Bills will be closing out their final season at Highmark Stadium in red -- at least, in red helmets.

The Bills announced on Tuesday afternoon that red helmets would be worn for the team's Week 18 game against the New York Jets. Wearing the helmets was a much-anticipated move by fans.

The lids feature a blue-and-white stripe, white face mask and a primarily blue buffalo mascot. They were worn from 1987-2001, including the team's four straight Super Bowl appearances from 1991-94. Buffalo made the announcement with images of the team wearing their traditional blue jerseys and white pants with the red helmet.

Quarterback Josh Allen ignited interest in red helmets by wearing one to the team's stadium practice in 2022. Bills chief operating officer Pete Guelli also teased the red helmet in his training camp dorm room on Tuesday morning.

The Bills also announced on Tuesday that they will wear their "Standing Buffalo" throwback uniforms twice during the season -- against the Atlanta Falcons in Week 6, who are also wearing throwbacks for the "Monday Night Football" matchup, and when hosting the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Week 11. Buffalo previously wore the throwback threads in 2021. The uniform features a red standing buffalo on the helmet and predominantly white uniforms with red and blue features.

The team will move to its new stadium that is being built across the street from the current one in 2026.
