CLEVELAND -- Jameis Winston will continue to start at quarterback for the Cleveland Browns despite throwing three interceptions in a 27-10 loss to the Los Angeles Chargers on Sunday, coach Kevin Stefanski said.
The defeat dropped Cleveland to 2-7, tied for the worst record in the NFL, as the team enters its bye week.
"Yes," Stefanski said when asked whether Winston would retain his starting spot. "And again, those are the type of things that we just have to play better as a team."
One week after leading the Browns to an upset win over the Baltimore Ravens and winning AFC Offensive Player of the Week honors, Winston struggled in his second start of the season. He completed 26 of 46 passes for 235 yards with one touchdown and three interceptions. Winston was also sacked six times.
Cleveland recorded just 57 net yards in the first half and trailed 20-3 at halftime. Each of Winston's interceptions came in the second half.
Dorian Thompson-Robinson and Bailey Zappe, who was signed off the Kansas City Chiefs' practice squad on Oct. 22, are the other quarterbacks on the Browns' active roster. Deshaun Watson suffered a season-ending right Achilles tendon tear in Week 7.
"Complementary football wins day in and day out," Winston said. "And as a quarterback, my job is to lead our team to get in the end zone. And we didn't do that enough."
"The biggest thing is we have to eliminate plays that beat us," he later said. "I had three of them, and we all know the plays that we can help this team out with. So that's just accountability, and I think we're going to embrace that. Having a week to really digest how we can get better is required."
