FOXBOROUGH, Mass. -- New England Patriots rookie quarterback Drake Maye was ruled out for the rest of Sunday's 25-22 victory over the New York Jets with a concussion.

The injury appeared to come on a play late in the first quarter in which Maye had scrambled for an 18-yard gain. As Maye slid at the end of the run, Jets linebacker Jamien Sherwood's helmet made contact with Maye's helmet during a tackle attempt.

Maye was slow to get up but stayed in the game for the final four plays of the drive, which extended into the second quarter. After the Patriots punted, Maye headed to the sideline and sat on the bench initially before he was brought to the medical tent for evaluation. He then walked to the locker room under his own power.

"I walked in at halftime and saw him," Patriots coach Jerod Mayo said. "The competitor that he is, obviously he wanted to go back out there and play. But there's a protocol that he has to go through. Can't wait to get him back."

Veteran Jacoby Brissett, who started the first five games of the season for New England, took over for Maye and went 15-of-24 for 132 yards and led the Patriots on their game-winning touchdown drive at the end of the fourth quarter. Brissett also added three rushes for 11 yards as the Patriots snapped a six-game losing streak.

"You never want to see a player go down. Obviously hoping Drake gets back," Brissett said, before referencing Mayo's comments that the team was "playing soft" last week for its inability to run the ball, stop the run and cover kicks. "We got a challenge earlier this week. The guys came out and responded well."

Maye used his scrambling ability to score a 17-yard touchdown in the first quarter that gave the Patriots a 7-0 lead.

He rushed three times for 46 yards and was 3-of-6 for 23 yards passing in the game.
