The Washington Commanders, once again, are looking for a kicker. The Commanders released Cade York three weeks after trading for him and one day after he missed two field goals in a season-opening loss.
Washington traded a conditional seventh-round pick to Cleveland for York, but because he was not on the roster for two games the Commanders do not have to relinquish the pick.
York missed wide right from 56 and 47 yards in Sunday's 37-20 loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Washington is expected to sign veteran Austin Seibert to replace, a source confirmed to ESPN. Seibert has made 45-of-56 career field goal attempts.
The Athletic first reported Seibert's signing.
Washington allowed Joey Slye to leave via free agency; he's now kicking for New England. The Commanders signed Brandon McManus in March but cut him in May after a lawsuit was filed against him by two women alleging sexual assault on a team plane while he played for Jacksonville last season.
The suit was dismissed because it failed to meet "exceptional case" criteria enabling the women to file the case anonymously.
Washington also had signed Ramiz Ahmed in June and Riley Patterson in August. Ahmed was cut in camp and Patterson was released after the team acquired York.
"It's certainly not ideal, but it does speak to, if it's not right you don't sit pat," Washington coach Dan Quinn said. "We will get there. I'm disappointed ... but we owe it to everybody to keep digging."
Cleveland drafted York in the fourth round of the 2022 draft, but he's now looking for his fifth organization. He made 24-of-32 kicks for the Browns as a rookie but did not attempt another kick in a game until Sunday.
