GLENDALE, Ariz. -- Arizona Cardinals receiver Marquise 'Hollywood' Brown was arrested and charged with criminal speeding Wednesday morning.
Arizona Department of Public Safety spokesman Bart Graves confirmed that Brown was arrested at 7:05 a.m. on State Route 101, which surrounds three-quarters of the Phoenix Metro area. He was booked in the Maricopa County Jail and released on his own recognizance Wednesday evening following a brief hearing in Maricopa County Superior Court.
Brown's next court appearance is set for Aug. 23.
Brown was pulled over driving while 126 MPH in a 65 MPH zone by an officer who was parked under an overpass. In Arizona, criminal speeding is defined as anything 20 mph over the posted speed limit. It is a misdemeanor.
"We are aware of the situation regarding Hollywood Brown and have reported it to the NFL office as required," the Cardinals said in a statement on Wednesday. "We will comment further as appropriate."
Brown was traveling from his home to State Farm Stadium for practice on Wednesday when he was pulled over, Cardinals coach Kliff Kingsbury said. He talked with Brown about the incident, which Kingsbury described as "unfortunate" and said Brown "can't be doing that."
"Obviously, he knows he's got to be better than that and he will be moving forward," Kingsbury said Thursday.
Kingsbury added: "Just glad he's safe and we're still working through the details of it all but glad to have him back."
A year after then-rookie linebacker Zaven Collins was arrested for driving 76 MPH in a 35 MPH zone in Scottsdale, Kingsbury said he would "definitely address it."
"We understand anytime you have that sort of caravan coming from one place to the next, you got to be smart and you got to follow the rules and obey the laws, so hopefully you don't have any more incidents," Kingsbury said.
Brown was acquired in a draft-day deal with the Baltimore Ravens and is expected to play a big role in Arizona's offense, especially during the first six weeks when three-time All-Pro DeAndre Hopkins is out because of a suspension for violating the league's policy on performance enhancers.
Brown caught 91 passes for 1,007 yards and six touchdowns for the Ravens last season. The receiver hasn't practiced much during training camp because of a hamstring injury he suffered while working out on his own in July. He had just come off the active/non-football injury list on Tuesday and has yet to go through a full training camp practice.
Brown was not seen at Wednesday's practice. It was unclear whether Kingsbury knew about Brown's arrest during his media availability earlier Wednesday morning, which was shortly before the receiver's arrest became public.
He did address Brown's health, saying he hoped the 25-year-old would be ready to practice without limitations sometime in the next week.
"We'll see," Kingsbury said. "We had hoped maybe this weekend, but we're going to be smart. When he's back, I want him full speed and confident. Playing in a new system, you don't want him thinking too much about anything physically. He's going to have enough thinking going on, so I would guess maybe this weekend."
