LOS ANGELES -- His enthusiasm couldn't be contained.
Jared Goff, known for his even-keel demeanor, ran to the sideline and delivered a celebratory chest bump with his head coach, Sean McVay.
"He drilled me," McVay said, laughing. "He got me pretty good right there. We were both excited."
Moments earlier, the Los Angeles Rams quarterback had delivered a strike over the middle to hit receiver Cooper Kupp in stride for a 70-yard touchdown.
The throw was among Goff's best of the season, but it wasn't even his most impressive moment of the night in a 38-31 win over the Minnesota Vikings at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum.
"The dude is a straight baller being that accurate delivering the ball," receiver Robert Woods said. "Just standing tall in the pocket, making the right decisions and leading this team."
Against the Vikings, Goff set career highs with 465 yards passing and five passing touchdowns. He completed 26 of 33 attempts, threw no interceptions and finished with a perfect passer rating of 158.3. He is the third quarterback in the Super Bowl era with a perfect passer rating on at least 30 attempts, joining fellow Ram Kurt Warner in 2000 and Ken O'Brien in 1986.
"It felt pretty good all night," Goff said. "We're really clicking right now, and I feel good about where we're at."
Goff's previous career high was 355 passing yards, set last season in a victory over the Houston Texans. He had two performances with four passing touchdowns, in wins over the New York Giants and Tennessee Titans last season.
Tight windows? Goff threw it there. Double coverage? Goff dropped it in. Receivers on the loose? Goff hit them in stride.
"Jared's an absolute playmaker with how he's able to place the ball," Kupp said. "How he's able to slide in the pocket and make some of these throws."
Goff's first touchdown pass was an 8-yard throw to Todd Gurley.
But it was in the second quarter that the third-year quarterback really let it fly.
Goff dropped back and launched a pass over the middle to Kupp, who had slipped behind Vikings linebacker Anthony Barr, for a 70-yard touchdown, the third longest of Goff's career, to give the Rams a 14-10 lead.
The reception was the longest of Kupp's career.
"I was fired up about that one because that was one we kind of had tweaked with during the week," Goff said. "And it came out again -- kind of just how we pictured it and wanted it to."
Later in the quarter, Goff rolled to his right, kept calm with pressure coming and dropped a pass into double coverage in the back corner of the end zone for a 19-yard touchdown to Kupp.
"I thought he was just going to throw it away," said Kupp, who finished with nine catches for 162 yards and two touchdowns. "But with where he put that, it couldn't have been any better."
Goff also completed a 47-yard touchdown pass to Brandin Cooks, who caught seven passes for 116 yards, and a 31-yard touchdown pass to Woods, who had five catches for 101 yards.
Goff's five passing touchdowns tied for the most in Rams history and are the most by a Rams quarterback since Kurt Warner in 1999.
And he became the first quarterback in NFL history with at least 350 passing yards and a 75 percent rate of completions in three straight games, which helped the Rams to their first 4-0 start since 2001.
"Can't say enough about that performance of Jared Goff," McVay said. "It was just great command by him."
