Dirk Koetter: Too early to speculate on Jameis Winston shoulder injury

GLENDALE, Ariz. -- Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Jameis Winston left the Bucs' 38-33 loss to the Arizona Cardinals with a shoulder injury in the first quarter and did not return.

Head coach Dirk Koetter said that X-rays were negative and that Winston would undergo an MRI on Monday. Koetter would not commit to or speculate on Winston's availability for next week.

"Right now, it's just too early for that," Koetter said. "Of course, yeah, we're concerned about it. That's why we did get a veteran backup, though."

On third down of the opening possession of the game, Winston took a hit from Cardinals outside linebacker Chandler Jones and fell awkwardly onto his right shoulder.

"I fell on my shoulder," Winston said. "I had that injury before. If it was my other shoulder, I would have been fine, but in the throwing shoulder, it's kind of tough."

After the offense left the field, Winston was seen tossing the ball on the sideline to try to loosen his arm up, and he briefly returned to action.

"When I started warming back up on the sidelines, that's when I felt it," he said. "I tried to battle it out. Sitting on the sideline only makes it worse. It stiffens it all."

Backup Ryan Fitzpatrick went 5-of-10 for 61 passing yards, no touchdowns and no interceptions as the Cardinals jumped to a 24-0 lead, completing 22-of-32 passes for 290 yards, three touchdowns and two interceptions.

"The one thing I can say about him is that he's one of the toughest players I've ever played with," Fitzpatrick said of Winston. "So for him to come out of a game -- that was killing him.

"I just wanted to do him right. I wanted to go out there and play well for him because I know how much he loves the game and how much this team means to him. I'm upset we didn't pull off the win. I'm upset I didn't pull off the win for him. He's as tough as they come."
