Green Bay Packers tight end Andrew Quarless could face discipline from the NFL after he was sentenced to one year of probation and required to pay a $1,000 fine on Monday in a Florida court for firing a gun in public July 4 in Miami Beach.
According to court records, Quarless will be required to attend an anger management course and a weapons safety course. He also forfeited the gun.
In most cases, the NFL waits for the legal system to rule before issuing its own discipline. Earlier this year, Packers defensive tackle Letroy Guion was suspended for the first three games of the season after charges for possession of marijuana and a firearm were resolved in a similar fashion -- with a fine and probation.
Quarless, who was originally charged with a misdemeanor for firing a weapon in public, was scheduled to go to trial Monday, according to the court records, but he entered a no contest plea in exchange for the fine, probation and other penalties.
Quarless did not appear in court. He returned to the practice field Monday for the first time since he sustained a knee injury in Week 3. He remains on the injured-reserve/designated to return list, but the Packers would not rule out the possibility that he could play in Thursday's game at the Detroit Lions.
