Bush can help 49ers rushing attack

Pro Football Focus will be providing analysis for every major NFL signing and trade during the 2015 free-agency period, accounting primarily for the quality of the player and his fit with his new team, and focusing less on the financial terms of the deal.

Here is a grade for the deal between Reggie Bush and the San Francisco 49ers.

San Francisco 49ers: B-minus

In 2014, the 49ers had Frank Gore and Carlos Hyde; two talented runners whose strengths weren't as receivers. The addition of Bush gives the 49ers a receiving threat out of the backfield, which they have lacked for several years.

While Hyde got double-digit touches in only three games, he produced an elusive rating of 72.0 which was sixth best for those RBs with 50 or more carries. He can handle more carries, which would leave Bush in for a few carries per game as well as passing situations.

Bush's strength is making guys miss after he gets the ball in his hands. He forced seven missed tackles on his catches and another 15 on his runs last season. He was released by Detroit because the Lions had younger, cheaper backs who were good at the same things as Bush, not because he is finished.

Upon signing, Bush becomes the sixth-oldest halfback on an NFL roster, so his best days are probably behind him. While he isn't going to make as big of an impact as other free agents signed this past week, he will be a decent role player for San Francisco.
