2020 NFL draft: The year of the defense (2:17)

Kevin Negandhi dives into the careers of the top four defensive prospects of the 2020 draft, including Ohio State's Chase Young and Clemson's Isaiah Simmons. (2:17)

Pencils down! With less than 48 hours until the 2020 NFL draft commences, I'm finally shutting off the game film and hitting submit on my final prospect rankings for this year's class.

Only 255 names will be called over the course of three days, but my board goes 300 deep. I've provided our Scouts Inc. grades in parentheses after each player's name, and the first 50 prospects include abridged scouting reports and video highlights. I also rolled out my full positional breakdown of the rankings at the bottom, which includes more than 500 prospects in total and as many as 81 per position.

Top 300
1-25 | 26-50 | 51-75 | 76-100
101-150 | 151-200 | 201-250 | 251-300

Position rankings
QB | RB | WR | TE | C | OT | G
ILB | OLB | DE | DT | CB | S | K | P

1. Chase Young, DE, Ohio State (Grade: 95)

Height: 6-foot-4 | Weight: 264 pounds | Highlights

Young has elite takeoff quickness, speed and closing burst. He is a flexible athlete with the ability to extend his rush while engaged with offensive linemen, his hand quickness is outstanding and he plays with good natural bend. There's room for improvement when it comes to getting off blocks when teams run at him, but he is big and strong enough to set the edge when his technique is sound. Young should develop into one of the premier edge rushers in the NFL.

2. Joe Burrow, QB, LSU (94)

Height: 6-3 | Weight: 221 | Highlights

Burrow is an NFL-ready QB with excellent football intelligence. He has elite pocket presence, feeling the rush and maneuvering without compromising his progression reads. And his accuracy is at the NFL level, as he throws receivers open with anticipation. Burrow also has good size, mobility, athleticism and toughness.

3. Derrick Brown, DT, Auburn (94)

Height: 6-4 | Weight: 326 | Highlights

Brown is a really easy mover for his size. He has quick and active hands but needs to learn to be more efficient with them. Quick and active against the run, he does a very good job of locating the ball. And while sack production has been average, he is disruptive as a pass-rusher. Brown is a versatile defensive lineman who likely fits best as a 3-technique in a one-gap-heavy NFL scheme but is capable of moving up and down the line of scrimmage. He is a plug-and-play NFL starter.

4. Isaiah Simmons, OLB, Clemson (94)

Height: 6-3 | Weight: 238 | Highlights

Simmons has elite natural talent and is one of the most versatile defenders in the draft class. He does it all. Simmons has the frame and athletic ability to hold up one-on-one against most tight ends. He has the range and ball skills to play in deep-half coverage. He shows first-step burst, bend and closing speed in getting to the quarterback off the edge. And he's a sideline-to-sideline run defender who does an above-average job of slipping blocks. The big question is what position he will play in the NFL.

5. Jeff Okudah, CB, Ohio State (94)

Height: 6-1 | Weight: 205 | Highlights

Okudah is a long corner with smooth hips, quick feet and very good playing speed. Though he occasionally lunges and his footwork is a little inconsistent, he's athletic and quick enough to recover in press coverage. Okudah has outstanding physical tools and grades out as an immediate NFL starting cornerback.

6. Jerry Jeudy, WR, Alabama (94)

Height: 6-1 | Weight: 192 | Highlights

Jeudy is a premier wide receiver prospect. He has very good initial burst and top-end speed, and he's a truly exceptional route runner. He is as smooth and polished as any college receiver I've evaluated in 20 years. Jeudy exposes defensive backs with his savvy and hip flexibility at the top of stems, and he has a great feel for locating soft spots in zone coverage and working back to his QB on scramble-drill situations. He shows soft hands and naturally tracks the ball vertically, too.

7. Tua Tagovailoa, QB, Alabama (93)

Height: 6-0 | Weight: 217 | Highlights

Tagovailoa has fast eyes, outstanding field vision from inside the pocket and natural instincts. His release is quick and compact, and his touch and accuracy are elite on all three levels. Tagovailoa displays rare anticipation and timing. Durability is obviously the biggest concern. But Tagovailoa is a special talent -- very similar to a left-handed version of Drew Brees. His suddenness and natural accuracy are unique traits.

8. Jedrick Wills Jr., OT, Alabama (93)

Height: 6-3 | Weight: 312 | Highlights

In pass protection, Wills has adequate quickness in his set and is a natural knee bender. He has a powerful punch and rarely gives up ground against power rushers. His overall balance is adequate to good, and he's a wide-bodied force in the run game. He takes solid angles, has natural leverage, latches on with a strong grip and is a powerful finisher. Wills grades out as a plug-and-play starter at right tackle, though he also has the potential to kick inside to guard.

9. Javon Kinlaw, DT, South Carolina (92)

Height: 6-5 | Weight: 324 | Highlights

Kinlaw is a physically gifted athlete with very good speed for his size. He has a quick first step, he shows good initial power to jar linemen, and he has quick hands to disengage. But he needs to do a better job of transferring speed-to-power effectiveness and develop some better countermoves. Kinlaw possesses a powerful upper body to lock out as a run defender, and he has very good range. He fits best in a one-gap-heavy scheme and projects as a plug-and-play NFL starter with upside.

10. CeeDee Lamb, WR, Oklahoma (92)

Height: 6-1 | Weight: 193 | Highlights

Lamb has above-average top-end speed and is a highly refined route runner. He knows how to get off the press, how to leverage his stems and how to set DBs up in man-to-man coverage -- and he is highly adept at locating soft spots in zone. He also shows very good ball skills, especially on contested catches, and is strong in traffic. But he really excels after the catch. Lamb is highly instinctive with the ball in his hands and breaks a lot of tackles.

11. Henry Ruggs III, WR, Alabama (92)

Height: 5-11 | Weight: 188 | Highlights

Ruggs has average size with exceptional top-end speed. He explodes off the line of scrimmage and threatens defensive backs immediately. He is not afraid to work the middle of the field and shows good crispness getting in and out of breaks. Ruggs also displays outstanding ball skills within his frame, confidently plucking and transitioning up the field. But he does not have a big catch radius and is still developing as a route runner.

12. Mekhi Becton, OT, Louisville (92)

Height: 6-7 | Weight: 364 | Highlights

Becton was a three-year starter with 21 starts at left tackle and 12 starts at right tackle. He has a rare combination of size, speed and length, as well as the power to move defenders off the ball in the run game. He has heavy hands and knocks defenders off balance when he lands his punch. Becton has the potential to develop into an elite pass-blocker in the NFL, but his footwork is inconsistent, and he leans at times.

13. CJ Henderson, CB, Florida (91)

Height: 6-0 | Weight: 204 | Highlights

Henderson has above-average height and weight and shows outstanding top-end speed. He is primarily an outside cornerback who is at his best in man-to-man coverage. He shows smooth hips and does a very good job of getting his head around and locating the ball vertically. And his overall ball skills are very strong. He's a bit of a buffet tackler -- he picks and chooses -- but Henderson grades out as a starter early in his NFL career.

14. Justin Jefferson, WR, LSU (91)

Height: 6-1 | Weight: 202 | Highlights

Jefferson is a natural hands catcher with excellent length and above-average body control. There's some concern about his ability to separate on the outside, but he's an instinctive route runner with good quickness and the awareness to locate pockets in zone looks out of the slot. He catches the ball in stride and has above-average burst after the catch.

15. Tristan Wirfs, OT, Iowa (91)

Height: 6-4 | Weight: 320 | Highlights

Wirfs started 33 games at right tackle for Iowa. He is tall and long, and he has rare athletic tools. He has a powerful punch, is athletic enough to mirror when he wins with his hands and has sound footwork, though he oversets and loses inside-outside leverage at times. As a run-blocker, Wirfs fits best in a zone scheme. He moves well laterally and has elite range and mobility as a second-level blocker. However, he needs to improve his angles and play with better balance in the run game.

16. Andrew Thomas, OT, Georgia (91)

Height: 6-5 | Weight: 315 | Highlights

Thomas has the ideal combination of height and weight with long arms and big hands. And he shows good quickness and overall mobility. Thomas has a quick pass-protection set with explosive shock in the hands. As a run-blocker, he does a good job with his first step, gets his hands in place and then brings his hips and feet around. Thomas grades out as a Day 1 starting left tackle in the NFL.

17. Xavier McKinney, S, Alabama (91)

Height: 6-0 | Weight: 201 | Highlights

McKinney's versatility is his best trait. He allows his defense to be so multiple because of his ability to play two-high, single-high, in-the-box or as the overhang (slot). He has great natural instincts in both phases of the game, diagnosing quickly, taking great angles and making plays when around the ball. What stands out on tape is his ability in off coverage. He does a great job of reading the QB's eyes, staying in balance and then exploding forward with elite closing burst. McKinney fills hard in the run game and is a big hitter for his size.

18. D'Andre Swift, RB, Georgia (91)

Height: 5-8 | Weight: 212 | Highlights

Swift has solid vision and the ability to explode through the hole. He really excels as an outside zone runner -- he can stick his foot in the dirt and explode upfield. In the pass game, he is a solid route runner and shows soft hands.

19. K'Lavon Chaisson, DE, LSU (90)

Height: 6-3 | Weight: 254 | Highlights

Chaisson shows outstanding first-step quickness off the edge, good top-end speed and the ability to bend around the edge. There is also shock in his hands as a pass-rusher, though he still has a lot of work to do with his hand-to-hand combat. Chaisson is much more powerful than he looks, and he sets a hard edge for his size while displaying upper-body strength to control blockers.

20. Jordan Love, QB, Utah State (90)

Height: 6-4 | Weight: 224 | Highlights

Love still has work to do processing in the pocket and protecting the football. But he has great size, a live arm and the ability to extend plays with his legs. And he has some twitch to him and the ability to make second-reaction throws. When his feet are right and he's in balance, Love can be very accurate.

21. Patrick Queen, ILB, LSU (90)

Height: 6-0 | Weight: 229 | Highlights

Queen is an undersized, off-the-ball linebacker with excellent quickness, burst and lower-body explosion. He has great range in coverage, quick feet, fluid hips and quick redirection skills. And he shows very good recognition skills. In the run game, Queen diagnoses quickly and decisively and fires through gaps. He shows outstanding closing burst to the ball carrier and is a lot more powerful as a tackler than his size indicates. Queen is the definition of an every-down linebacker in today's league.

22. Ezra Cleveland, OT, Boise State (90)

Height: 6-6 | Weight: 311 | Highlights

Cleveland was a three-year starter at left tackle. He has shorter arms for a tackle, but he gets set quickly and doesn't lunge or chase with his hands. He has the body control and foot speed to mirror. He's also an effective positional blocker with the skill set to excel in a zone-heavy scheme -- he's smooth climbing and covers up linebackers at the second level.

23. Brandon Aiyuk, WR, Arizona State (90)

Height: 6-0 | Weight: 205 | Highlights

Aiyuk tracks the ball well and is fast enough to threaten vertically. He makes defenders miss and breaks tackles after the catch, and he's an above-average route runner with good burst. He flashes the ability to pluck the ball out of the air and has an outstanding catch radius for his frame.

24. Justin Herbert, QB, Oregon (89)

Height: 6-6 | Weight: 236 | Highlights

Herbert has rare size, a rocket launcher for an arm and good speed in the open field. He has a smooth and quick stroke for a long-levered quarterback with elite natural arm strength, but he has struggled with consistency in both his ball placement on deep passes and touch on underneath throws. Herbert is tough inside the pocket yet lacks ideal short-area quickness and has struggled under pressure throughout his career.

25. Ross Blacklock, DT, TCU (89)

Height: 6-3 | Weight: 290 | Highlights

Blacklock has the size and strength to stack and shed blockers one-on-one. He does an above-average job of splitting double-teams and has the potential to develop into a productive interior pass-rusher in the NFL. Blacklock has great quickness, lower-body flexibility and closing burst, though there's room to improve when it comes to countermoves.

26. Kenneth Murray, ILB, Oklahoma (89)

Height: 6-2 | Weight: 241 | Highlights

Murray is a rangy inside linebacker with excellent closing speed. He has the burst to disrupt plays in the backfield, though there's room for improvement when it comes to getting off blocks. He has above-average stopping power but lacks ideal man-to-man cover skills. He's also quite effective spying quarterbacks.

27. J.K. Dobbins, RB, Ohio State (89)

Height: 5-9 | Weight: 209 | Highlights

Dobbins shows great burst and fluid hips, and he can make defenders miss in the short area. He has very good acceleration to turn the corner as an outside runner and shows above-average elusiveness in space. His hands are adequate, and there's room for growth in pass protection, but Dobbins grades out as a high-level starting running back.

28. Clyde Edwards-Helaire, RB, LSU (88)

Height: 5-7 | Weight: 207 | Highlights

Edwards-Helaire is built low to the ground with a thick lower body. He lacks ideal top-end speed but has excellent contact balance and is a great finisher. He starts and stops on a dime, possesses very good lateral agility, makes defenders miss in small spaces and covers the ball up in traffic. Edwards-Helaire is an instinctive runner with good patience. And in the passing game, he is a very good route runner and reliable pass-catcher. He's a three-down starter in the NFL.

29. Antoine Winfield Jr., S, Minnesota (88)

Height: 5-9 | Weight: 203 | Highlights

Winfield is a short safety with short arms, but he's quick, agile and fast for the position. And his instincts and recognition skills are elite. As was true with his father, who played 14 years in the NFL, those exceptional instincts and his toughness make up for size limitations. A true ball hawk, Winfield locates the ball in the air and shows strong hands to pluck. He's tough and aggressive versus the run, and he has good natural striking ability as a feisty wrap-up tackler.

Antoine Winfield Jr.'s NFL draft profile

Relive some of the key highlights that make former Minnesota safety Antoine Winfield Jr. a top prospect in this year's NFL draft.

30. Tee Higgins, WR, Clemson (88)

Height: 6-3 | Weight: 216 | Highlights

Higgins is a big target with good body control and an outstanding catching radius. He's an above-average vertical route runner with good but not great top-end speed. Higgins doesn't show great burst getting out of breaks and is more of a threat downfield than he is after the catch.

31. Isaiah Wilson, OT, Georgia (87)

Height: 6-7 | Weight: 350 | Highlights

Wilson is a massive right tackle with long arms and big hands. He is a natural knee bender with surprising flexibility and mobility. He is strong at the point of attack and won't give up much ground if balanced, but he needs to improve his footwork and hand placement as both a run-blocker and pass-blocker. Wilson is loaded with potential and is an intelligent player, but he needs a lot of refining.

32. A.J. Epenesa, DE, Iowa (87)

Height: 6-5 | Weight: 275 | Highlights

Epenesa is a big defensive end with average initial quickness and top-end speed. He's an active hand fighter who looks to force fumbles when he gets to the QB and gets his hands up in passing lanes. He has below-average lower-body flexibility and closing speed, but he's a high-effort player who chases hard in pursuit and plays with good technique. Against the run, Epenesa has the size, length and upper-body strength to set the edge.

33. Yetur Gross-Matos, DE, Penn State (87)

Height: 6-5 | Weight: 266 | Highlights

Gross-Matos is an effective hands fighter with above-average length. He has strong lateral mobility and does a good job of falling back inside once he's even with the quarterback. Against the run, he has the length, size and strength to set the edge against the run. He locates and tracks the ball well and chases with good effort.

34. Jonathan Taylor, RB, Wisconsin (87)

Height: 5-10 | Weight: 226 | Highlights

His vision is outstanding, and he shows excellent burst to and through the hole. He's a sudden runner with the ability to make sharp cuts on the move, and he can string together multiple moves in tight spaces. Taylor also has breakaway speed in the open field. He runs with good forward lean and lowers his pads on contact. His biggest weaknesses are pass protection and ball security.

35. Grant Delpit, S, LSU (87)

Height: 6-2 | Weight: 213 | Highlights

Delpit has the instincts and enough range to play center field. He picked off seven passes over the past two seasons and shows excellent focus when the ball is in the air. He's an active and aggressive run defender with very good size and flashes above-average stopping power, but he misses too many tackles and needs to become a more consistent finisher.

36. Zack Baun, OLB, Wisconsin (86)

Height: 6-2 | Weight: 238 | Highlights

Baun has an excellent motor as a pass-rusher, showing top-end closing burst when getting after the QB. A natural finisher with good sack production, Baun has shock in his hands and should continue to improve hand-to-hand combat skills. However, he lacks ideal flexibility and can be slow to redirect. Baun possesses solid instincts in zone coverage and quick feet in his drops, but he will have some man-to-man coverage limitations in the NFL.

37. Cesar Ruiz, C, Michigan (86)

Height: 6-2 | Weight: 307 | Highlights

Ruiz started five games at guard as a freshman and then 26 consecutive games at center over the past two seasons. He has good height and bulk, and he has longer arms for an interior offensive lineman. Ruiz has very good balance and doesn't fall off many blocks.

38. Josh Jones, OT, Houston (86)

Height: 6-5 | Weight: 319 | Highlights

Jones was a four-year starter at left tackle but lacks ideal length, so some teams might project him at guard. He's an above-average pass-blocker with good body control and athletic ability. He locks on and stays in front when he gets his hands inside. He flashes the ability to move defenders off the ball, he's an effective zone blocker and he excels at climbing to the second level in the run game. But his footwork and overall technique are inconsistent.

39. Trevon Diggs, CB, Alabama (86)

Height: 6-1 | Weight: 205 | Highlights

Diggs is a versatile athlete with great size and length, and he possesses solid straight-line speed. The majority of his experience is at left cornerback, but he also has played the "overhang" and free safety, in addition to his return experience. Diggs has some tightness in his hips and will give up separation against quicker receivers out of their breaks, but if used properly -- he is at his best in press-man and Cover 3 -- he is highly effective in coverage. A former wide receiver with natural ball skills, Diggs is very effective when contesting bigger wideouts for the ball.

40. Justin Madubuike, DT, Texas A&M (86)

Height: 6-2 | Weight: 293 | Highlights

Madubuike is an undersized 3-technique prospect with the quickness to disrupt plays in the backfield and the strength to hold his ground one-on-one. He has great upside as an interior pass-rusher, with outstanding athletic ability and good closing speed. There's room for improvement when it comes to his hand-to-hand combat skills, but he has good length and excellent upper-body strength.

41. Jordan Elliott, DT, Missouri (86)

Height: 6-4 | Weight: 302 | Highlights

Elliott shoots his hands inside, locates the ball and flashes the ability to get off blocks in time to make the play. He has the first-step quickness and agility to make plays in the backfield, too. But he's inconsistent taking on double-teams, even though he flashes above-average power in rushing the passer.

42. Michael Pittman Jr., WR, USC (86)

Height: 6-4 | Weight: 223 | Highlights

Pittman is a sure-handed receiver with good body control. He flashes deceptive burst after the catch and picks up yards after initial contact. He doesn't have an elite second gear but is fast enough to threaten vertically and does a good job of adjusting to back-shoulder throws.

43. Jeff Gladney, CB, TCU (85)

Height: 5-10 | Weight: 191 | Highlights

Gladney has above-average short-area man-to-man cover skills. He lacks ideal size, and bigger receivers give him problems, but he's tough with good length. He does a good job of reading the quarterback and playing the ball -- not the man -- in zone. Gladney has good timing breaking up passes, but he's not a natural playmaker.

44. Jaylon Johnson, CB, Utah (85)

Height: 5-11 | Weight: 193 | Highlights

Johnson is an effective press corner with good balance and speed. He does a good job of breaking on underneath routes in off-coverage, reads the quarterback well and plays the ball in zone. He also flashes the ability to pluck the ball out of the air. But his footwork is inconsistent, and Johnson allows separation transitioning out of breaks at times.

45. Cole Kmet, TE, Notre Dame (85)

Height: 6-5 | Weight: 262 | Highlights

Kmet is adept at locating soft spots in zone coverage but struggles at the top of his route to generate separation versus man-to-man coverage. He does a good job on contested catches and has solid speed for his size, flashing the ability to make some plays vertically down the seam. But he will never be an elite deep threat at the tight end position and does not offer much after the catch. Kmet is not an overpowering blocker but does a solid job with his angles and can use his big frame to wall off defenders in the run game.

46. Denzel Mims, WR, Baylor (85)

Height: 6-2 | Weight: 207 | Highlights

Mims has an excellent combination of size, speed and length. He has the second gear to take the top off the coverage, and he does a nice job of stacking defenders on vertical routes. His frame and body control also make him a threat in the red zone. But there's room for improvement when it comes to getting off press coverage.

play

Denzel Mims' NFL draft profile

Former Baylor WR Denzel Mims' highlights show a terrific athlete who is a dangerous deep threat.

47. Logan Wilson, ILB, Wyoming (84)

Height: 6-2 | Weight: 241 | Highlights

Wilson has active hands and shows the ability to quickly shed blocks. He flashes good stopping power, but bad angles occasionally lead to missed tackles. A former defensive back, Wilson has above-average cover skills and is fast enough to carry tight ends down the seam. He reads the quarterback and shows good awareness in zone.

48. Austin Jackson, OT, USC (84)

Height: 6-4 | Weight: 322 | Highlights

Jackson flashes the ability to move defenders in the run game and has the potential to develop into an above-average pass-blocker. He's quick and long enough to handle speed off the edge, and he does a very good job of resetting his hands and recovering. But Jackson oversets and gets beaten to the inside at times.

49. Neville Gallimore, DT, Oklahoma (84)

Height: 6-2 | Weight: 304 | Highlights

Stout at the point of attack, Gallimore flashes the ability to drive interior offensive linemen back. He tracks the ball and can get off blocks in time to make the play. And while he is an above-average hand fighter and closes well in a straight line rushing the passer, he stalls out at times as a bull rusher.

50. Jeremy Chinn, S, Southern Illinois (83)

Height: 6-3 | Weight: 221 | Highlights

Chinn has the size, length and speed to check tight ends in coverage as well as the range to play center field. He's a playmaker who tracks the ball well -- and has the frame and leaping ability to win 50-50 balls. He's versatile enough to play deep, line up over the slot and line up at linebacker depth. Chinn is also an above-average tackler who flashes the ability to get off blocks.
