Bullets fire as Taipans cop another NBL whipping

Jack McVeigh has fired in his return from injury but Brisbane had the answers as Cairns' NBL woes continued.

Out for three weeks with a wrist injury, the Taipans' big-money Boomers recruit had 23 points and six assists but the Bullets scored freely at the other end in a 113-85 Thursday night win.

Brisbane centre Tyrell Harrison feasted around the rim, scoring 21 points and collecting eight rebounds.

The victory was Brisbane's (4-6) first in four home games this season while the last-placed Taipans sunk to 2-8.

Cairns have lost their last seven, five of those by at least 27 points, as they deal with personnel changes and injury interruptions.

The Taipans' offence at least showed signs on Thursday as they built a 27-25 first-quarter lead.

There were 25 lead changes approaching half-time before a 10-point Bullets run put them up 57-47 at the main break.

The hosts pushed that out further in the third quarter, Alex Ducas firing a quick triple that had McVeigh throwing his head back in disgust.

Taipans coach Adam Forde was unimpressed with his side's desperation as the Bullets continued to pick off their own missed shots.

His men responded to get the margin back into single figures but again let themselves down with unforced errors.

A fast start to the final term was capped by a steal and runaway slam from Casey Prather (21 points, 10 rebounds) that opened the floodgates.

The Bullets were able to feed Harrison in the key often enough while Jaylen Adams (20 points, seven assists) had his best game as a Bullet ahead of a date with former team Sydney on Saturday.

New Brisbane import, American guard Dakota Mathias (11 points), saw his first minutes, hitting three triples to join five other Bullets in double-figures.

Taine Murray and Tristan Devers also provided spark for Brisbane with 24 points and four assists between them.

For Cairns, Reyne Smith (eight points) looked good early while Andrew Andrews (11 points, 10 assists) chimed in.
