The Chicago Cubs placed right fielder Seiya Suzuki on the 10-day injured list with a right oblique strain, the team announced on Monday.
Suzuki, 29, was hurt in Sunday's win over the Seattle Mariners but stayed in the game until its completion.
The three-year veteran was off to a good start at the plate, hitting .305 with three home runs in 15 games. He has been a key offensive contributor for the Cubs, who enter Monday's game against the Arizona Diamondbacks with a 9-6 mark. Suzuki's 94.7 mph average exit velocity ranks sixth in MLB and third in the National League.
Outfielder Alexander Canario was recalled from Triple-A Iowa to take Suzuki's place on the roster. He could see time both in the outfield and at designated hitter after appearing in six games last season. He had two home runs in Iowa before being called up.
