In a series of roster moves Tuesday, the San Francisco Giants put second baseman Scooter Gennett on unconditional release waivers, put pitcher Trevor Gott on the injured list and optioned infielder Abiatal Avelino to Triple-A Sacramento.
The Giants acquired Gennett from the Cincinnati Reds at the trade deadline last month, and he hit .234 with two homers and six RBIs in 64 at-bats over 21 games with the team. He played only 22 games with the Reds after missing most of the season because of a severe groin strain.
A free agent after the season, Gennett is coming off back-to-back seasons of at least 20 home runs and 90 RBIs. In his 43 games this year, he's hitting .226 with two homers and 11 RBIs.
To fill the roster spots, the Giants recalled infielder Mauricio Dubon and outfielder Joey Rickard from Sacramento and selected right-hander Tyler Rogers from the River Cats.
