Yankees set record for homers in calendar month

LOS ANGELES -- The New York Yankees not only set a record for home runs in a single month on Sunday afternoon at Dodger Stadium, they also did it in style.

DJ LeMahieu's sixth home run from the leadoff spot this season gave the Yankees a total of 59 home runs in August, a major league record, surpassing the 58 home runs hit by Baltimore in May 1987 and Seattle in May 1999.

But the Bronx Bombers quickly added their 60th home run to the tally, with Aaron Judge's third dinger of the series. Judge sat on a Clayton Kershaw curve ball for his 99th career home run and 15th of the season.

But this one was particularly special, since he had promised it to a Yankees fan he interacted with on the field before the game.

"I'll hit one for you tonight," Judge said to a fan ahead of Sunday's series finale, as can be heard in a video tweeted from the account @R2C2, belonging to a podcast hosted by Yankees pitcher CC Sabathia.

After the game, Judge praised the talent and quality depth of the Yankees' lineup.

"I've never been on a team before that, 1 through 9, they can hurt you -- or even the guys off the bench," he said. "You saw today with Mike Ford -- comes in off the bench our first at-bat, hits a homer off one of the best left-handed pitchers in the game ever. That doesn't happen too often. So it just speaks volumes to what type of team we have. I didn't know we broke another record; that's pretty amazing."

Judge has started to display his remarkable power again, lining a third-inning home run off National League Cy Young candidate Hyun-Jin Ryu on Friday, one of the Yankees' five homers in their dominating 10-2 win over the Dodgers. Judge hit a 424-foot homer to center field for the Yankees' only run against the Dodgers on Saturday.

It's the fourth time in Judge's career that he has homered in three consecutive games, with all three other instances happening in 2017.

The Yankees have played 25 games in August, and they have five more to play until the end of the month, including three games against the Seattle Mariners at T-Mobile Park, followed by two games at Yankee Stadium against the Oakland Athletics as part of a three-game set.
