Georgetown freshman and projected first-round pick Thomas Sorber has hired an agent and will declare for the 2025 NBA draft while maintaining his college eligibility, he told ESPN on Thursday.
"The dream is for me to get to the NBA," Sorber said. "Not just me, but my family."
Sorber, the No. 24 prospect in ESPN's NBA draft rankings, was named to the Big East All-Freshman Team and third-team all-conference after averaging 14.5 points, 8.5 rebounds, 2.4 assists and 2.0 blocks in 31.4 minutes per game this season. He was a strong candidate to win Big East Freshman of the Year honors but was sidelined with a foot injury in February that required season-ending surgery.
Sorber, who is 6-foot-10 and is ESPN's No. 56 recruit in the 2024 class, was not considered an immediate one-and-done candidate entering college. He burst onto NBA radar screens quickly when the season started, though, lighting up teams' internal draft models by filling up the stat sheet with points, rebounds, assists, blocks, and steals, while hitting occasional 3-pointers, suggesting the then-18-year-old could develop into the type of versatile two-way big man NBA teams covet in the modern game.
"I've always been looked over my entire basketball career," Sorber told ESPN. "This wasn't anything different. I just came in with the same mentality I always have. Which is to kill, kill, kill and try to help my team win.
"I am the type of player who will always make the right play. I can do a little bit of everything -- pass, rebound, sit down and switch onto guards. Read plays and come from the weak side for blocks. I have a good touch. A feel for the game. But the main thing is to try and help my team win. Everyone says they want to be like [Nikola] Jokic. I also like to watch Bam Adebayo. His hustle, the way he's expanded his game and switches from 1 to 5."
The NBA draft will be held June 25-26 in New York City. The first round will be conducted at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn.
