The St. John's Red Storm are entering the NCAA tournament with all hands on deck.
On Thursday night, the team was featured on "The Tonight Show" with host Jimmy Fallon singing a parody of the sea shanty "Soon May the Wellerman Come" about their goal of cutting the net down at the end of the Big Dance. Coach Rick Pitino even joined the rendition, and both he and Fallon wore Pitino's iconic white suit.
"Soon May the Wellerman Come" is a New Zealand folk ballad about a whaling ship's hunt for a right whale. It gained popularity in early 2021 when a cover of the song by British musician Nathan Evans went viral on TikTok.
The No. 6 Red Storm are 26-4 and in first place in the Big East. The last time they were in the AP Top 10 rankings was the 1999-00 season, and this will be their first NCAA tournament appearance since 2018-19. Bracketology projects St. John's as a 3-seed in the South Regional. The Red Storm next play the No. 20 Marquette Golden Eagles on Saturday.
