LOS ANGELES -- UCLA coach Steve Alford is getting a one-year contract extension through the 2020-21 season one year after arriving in Westwood.

Alford guided the Bruins to a 28-9 record, the Pac-12 tournament title and the school's first Sweet 16 appearance since 2008. He tied Gene Bartow (1975-76) for the most wins by any coach in his first season at the school.

Athletic director Dan Guerrero announced the extension Friday.

UCLA opens the season at home against Montana State on Nov. 14. The Bruins lost Kyle Anderson, Jordan Adams and Zach LaVine, who were all first-round selections in the NBA draft last spring.

Alford and his staff have secured an incoming freshman class ranked among the top 10 nationally by multiple recruiting services. UCLA will open the season with three high school McDonald's All-Americans -- sophomore Isaac Hamilton and freshmen Kevon Looney and Thomas Welsh -- set to take the court for the first time as Bruins.
