Patna Pirates were crowned champions for the third time in a row as they beat Gujarat Fortunegiants 55-38 to win the Pro Kabaddi Season 5.
Pardeep Narwal was the star of the show as he scored an incredible 19 raid points. Monu Goyat scored nine points whereas Jaideep chipped in with five tackle points. It was a disappointing night for Gujarat as their famed defence failed miserably on a night when it mattered the most. Captain Fazel Atrachali scored zero points whereas Abozar Mighani scored just one point.
Pardeep became the highest scorer for the second time in three seasons with 369 points.
Monu opened Patna's account in the second minute with a two-point raid. Rakesh Narwal then scored a super raid in the third minute as Gujarat led 3-2. Gujarat looked in commanding position after five minutes as they led 5-3 and reduced Patna Pirates to just two men. Sukesh Hegde scored a two-point raid as Gujarat inflicted an all-out to lead 9-3.
Patna's defence was struggling to have an impact on the match as they scored just one point in the first nine minutes, trailing 6-11. Gujarat continued to lead at 14-6 in the 11th minute as Patna were nearing another all-out. Vijay then scored two points and sent the two Iranians to the bench as Patna trailed at 8-14 in the 14th minute.
Pardeep turned the match on its head by scoring a five-point raid in the 16th minute as Patna inflicted an all-out to level the match at 15-15. Monu then scored a two-point raid in the 17th minute as Patna took a lead for the first time in the match.
Patna began the second-half in style as they inflicted an all out in the 23rd minute to lead at 27-21. Gujarat scored three successive points in the next three minutes as they trailed 25-29. Vijay then scored a crucial do-or-die raid in the 30th minute as Patna led 30-26 and got Pardeep back on the mat.
Pardeep came up with another super raid as Patna inflicted an all-out in the 32nd minute to lead 38-26. Gujarat came back strongly as they scored five points in two raids to trail 33-39. Pardeep scored another super raid in the 36th minute to extend Patna's lead at 43-34. Patna then forced a super tackle in the same minute to take the scores to 45-34.
Continuing to lead, Patna made Gujarat suffer as they inflicted another all-out in the final minute to win the match by 17 points.
