Emporia High School (Kan.) is home to one of the most successful high school wrestlers in the state. Senior Sal Tovar helped his team win the school's 10th state title, and along the way he claimed an individual championship capping off a 40-4 season. More impressively, Tovar became the all-time wins king at Emporia High with 132 wins, breaking the record of 131 wins that lasted nine years. Tovar looks back at his wrestling career and talks about the five memories that stick out the most.
1. 2009 state finals match
"The top memory would have to be my state finals match this season. It was my last high school high school match and had everything on the line. I won at the very end and it was a tremendous feeling."
2. Winning state as a team
"Everyone wants to win state as a team and to finally do that with your teammates you've been with since the beginning is amazing. Also having that feeling of sealing the deal with my final match was pretty sweet."
3. Wrestling through pain
"Dislocating my shoulder during my sophomore year at the state tournament and still competing with it and going 3-1 the next day and take fourth was amazing."
4. Team bonding
"Sounds weird but just team showers. Team showers bond our team and we all love it. Basically we are together most of the time. "
5. Justin Rose's incidents.
"Justin does the dumbest things but they're hilarious. (Example:) Justin was talking to coach as we were leaving he runs into a glass door and falls to the floor.
