Each weekday, ESPN RISE brings you five vital stats from athletes across the country.
Desert Vista (Phoenix) senior defensive end Devon Kennard is rated the nation's No. 1 defensive recruit in the ESPNU 150. However, the 6-foot-4, 250-pounder is out for the year after tearing the ACL and meniscus in his right knee in the third game of the season. Kennard had surgery last week and is expecting a six-month recovery period. Life without football right now is tough, but Kennard gave us five things that are helping him deal with not playing the sport he loves.
1. My next season
"I'm trying to prepare myself for my college decision. I want the opportunity to prove myself again." Note: Kennard is looking at USC, Arizona State, Cal and Texas.
2. My family
"They're here supporting me and getting me through day by day."
3. My attitude
"It's a rough deal, but as each day goes by, I'm getting back to walking normal again."
4. Football
"It could have been something much worse. It's only six months. Just the thought of playing again keeps me excited."
5. My team
"I really want to support my guys and be a leader. I'm going to be out there pumping them up."
