It took an extra inning, but Arizona State broke open a tight game with North Carolina to come away with a win in Sunday's first College World Series game.
The No. 5 national seed Sun Devils defeated the No. 4 Tar Heels 5-2 in 10 innings.
After ASU picked up four runs on a Carlos Ramirez RBI single and Kole Calhoun's three-run home run, Kyle Seager led off the bottom of the 10th with a double for the Tar Heels, their first extra-base hit of the game. Seager advanced to third on Ryan Graepel's groundout, and scored when Levi Michael reached first on an error by Zack MacPhee to trim the Tar Heels' deficit to 5-2.
But the one run was all the Heels could muster, as they head to the losers' bracket. The Sun Devils move into the winners' bracket, where they'll face the winner of tonight's Southern Miss-Texas matchup (ESPN2/ESPN360, 7 ET).
