Lewis Hamilton has recreated a scene from the movie Ferris Bueller's Day Off featuring his dream Ferrari car.

The scene, created by Hamilton's production company, Dawn Apollo Films, saw him take the place of a garage employee who takes the Ferrari for a joyride through the streets of Chicago.

In a post to social media, Hamilton said "a lot of cutting edge tech, production and planning" had to happen to film the scene to happen.

The film features Hamilton's favourite car of all time, the Ferrari 250 GT California Spyder.

In an interview with Time magazine ahead of the season, he called it "the ultimate retirement car" adding that he could "just see myself with Roscoe [his pet dog], him with a scarf and goggles in the seat next to me, driving down the PCH."

On Thursday, Hamilton posted the clip to Instagram ahead of the Formula 1 season-opening Australian Grand Prix. It surpassed 600,000 likes within five hours of going online.

"No better way to start the season than by fulfilling another dream," Hamilton wrote in the caption.

"Ferris Bueller's Day Off has been one of my favourite movies since I was a kid. This is to pay homage to the iconic film and to celebrate my first season with Ferrari. It definitely took a lot of cutting edge tech, production and planning to get right. Had to get the exact car too ... it's been a dream car since seeing the movie. Shout out to the legendary @edwardnortonofficial for coming along for the ride. This is the energy and excitement I'm bringing to the track this year. ANDIAMO!!"
